Title: 15x6 JK Rallye wheel stamped K 1 0 12 29
Post by: 69Z28-RS on July 21, 2018, 02:41:48 PM
During a recent cleanup of piles of parts, I found what I think is the 4th wheel from my '68 Z28; the other three were stamped   K 1 8 5  20  DF  (as normal), but this one has a stamp of     K  1  0  12  29   (no app code).   What I *suspect* is that this is a 12-29-1970 dated replacement 15x6 rallye wheel for several different cars (which all had the same size rallye on them), thus no application code.  I've never seen an old rallye wheel without an app code before, so I'm guessing.   The backspace for this wheel is 3-1/2" ..

Is my guess a good one?   Is the reason for no app code that the wheel is a replacement for multi apps?  Is this common to find wheels like this?

I would've thought that service replacement wheels would be stamped with an application code, to easily determine fitment, place orders, track inventory etc. in the same way that when an assembly-line part/assembly number was replaced with a service item, the P&A Catalogs were regularly revised to track the changes.
But hopefully those that know for sure will chime in.
I've seen a few wheels where the application code was very lightly stamped compared to the date code, no chance that's the case here Gary?

I think you assumption of date is correct Gary but the app code I assume was just missed and not common to what I've noted. I've had and seen many later service replacement wheels with the usage code stamped including many DF wheels. Have not noted your particular date stamping on a DF wheel but good to know.

I've used lacquer thinner to remove all the paint in trying to find the app code stamp, but so far nada,,,   I will widen my search... :)
I really believe this is the 4th wheel that was on my '68 Z28 (which I traded in 1976 - but was able to keep the wheels)... otherwise I have no idea where it came from..

Are the various 15x6 rallye wheels (DC, DF, DG, YS, etc) actually different in some regard?  ie. offset/backspace or ??

Gary that's my understanding, any change in design (for example, backspace/offset, section profile etc) would mean a different application code - like the change from AD to YH to accommodate more clearance for JL-8 brakes, and how there are minor differences again between YH and FW, like the cooling slot shape.

The DF has a unique backspacing. It is very visible as the center is flush with the rim. The Corvette 6 inch rim has about 3/8 inset.

The one I'm questioning has '0' offset (3.5" backspace)...  several other cars had optional 15x6 rallye wheels, full size cars.. el caminos, etc..
