Title: 1968 Z28 for sale on Hemmings
Post by: camarosearchin on July 04, 2018, 02:31:42 PM

Good morning folks,
I am brand new to this forum so I apologize in advance for any posting mistakes.
I have been very seriously looking at this 1968 z28 for sale on Hemmings. I've spoken with the owner, a very nice mature gentleman who says he's owned the car for about four years and really doesn't have any detailed information about past restorations. I think it's a beautiful car and love the color combo.
Would you guys be willing to look at it and voice an opinion?

Hmmm??? Is there a tachometer?

Thanks so much
David

First welcome.  After looking it over quickly, I'd pass.  Would like to see a better pic of the pad.  Trans is a restamp & 67 cluster.  I'm sure there is more.   Don't get me wrong is a well presenting car but the asking price and the issues would have me continuing my search.

At that price or anywhere close,  you want to verify EVERYTHING.  The two most critical photos were NOT legible enough to ascertain (engine stamping and trans stamping).  I'd also want to see the engine casting info and head casting information, differential casting/stamping, and I'd want to verify the PRE-restoration photos (says there's a book?)...  Any other documentation?  At that price Id' want to examine every critical Z28 part (carb, distributor, manifolds, etc)...

Visually it looks good (to me) but I really like Lemans blue '68 Z28...   :)

I've seen several '68 Muncies with a suffix stamp, lower case, not the same font size as the rest of the stamps. I have no idea what they correlate to (possibly a shift code ?). I doubt it's the ratio as in '69, but I wish someone could decipher it.

Agreed, nice car in my favorite color combo, but I would, like everyone else, want to verify every part pertaining to the Z option, plus very close pics of the block pad and surrounding surface to check for restamping. 68's without documentation are scary, especially at that aggressive price -

Regards,

While it's a nice car, it does have several issues and in my opinion, is priced around 30k too much. The car was on ebay on May 29th, 2013. It was being sold by the person that did the restoration. The car sold, and the buyer was a dealer out of Ft Myers, FL that turned around and tried to sell it at the Mecum (Dallas) September, 2013 auction. It didn't sell and the high bid at that time was $52k. He then put it on ebay on September 20th, 2013 but I don't know if it sold. It then showed back up at Mecum (Kissimmee) for the January, 2014 auction, where it sold for $66,960.00. I have no more info after that.

From the pictures I have, the engine's correct but the transmission isn't. The rear axle may be original as well, but there aren't any pictures of the axle tube stamp, just the carrier gear (a 4.56 ratio), and it's dated February, 1968. While that's 3 months before the car was built, it's still possible.

As I stated, there are a lot of incorrect items that would need to be fixed for it to be a high dollar car. If you're really interested in purchasing, I would HIGHLY suggest you have Jarry MacNeish inspect the car.

That's not a suffix code. It's believed to be just a place holder that was used in the gang stamp.

And for future searches, the VIN is 124378N434684

No 68 Muncies got an application code stamp, period. There are suspicions that those are inspection stamps (like the small squared off c) but nothing has been proven for sure.

124378N434684 sold at Mecum 4 years ago $66,960

Seller states under 50,000 original miles but it has the wrong instrument cluster so how can that be?

Blurry engine stamping looks restamped, but hard to tell with such a bad photo. Maybe thats why its blurry.

Lot's of other incorrect items in pictures.

Precisely what I was referring to - I've seen the small "c" stamp before. I haven't seen as many samples to know if it was regular or occasional, only that I have seen it before.

Passenger Mirror added at the dealership? Did they even MAKE a passenger side mirror, or flip the driver side one... Smog pulley on backwards... Battery cable ground should be at rad support, not right fender... GM door plaque stickers were not on these cars, I thought...No deck lid posi sticker...Windshield wiper arm dragging the lower trim. GEEZ, YOU CAN'T SEE THAT AFTER YOU INSTALL IT!!...Lots of little things. Why tape off the pad area? And if you ARE going to tape it off, why cut off part of the letters/numbers? Clean the whole thing! Then conveniently post that and the trans pictures blurry, ignorant. DO love the color with the blue interior. Danny

Several of the items you fellas mentioned I did notice and questioned. However, I'm thankful for all the responses and appreciate everyone's attention to detail.

This is exactly what I was hoping for!

Thanks to all.
