Title: Under-Dash Heater Box
Post by: rod396 on June 04, 2018, 02:56:50 PM
Just want to confirm, on a 68, the under-dash heater box color - is it semi-gloss black, or is it a dark gray?
Thanks for your help.

I would offer that the heater enclosure would be similar to the rad & Engine side heater core cover, a nice gloss black. They were constructed by the Harrison supplier and supplied to the factory. Others will add to this. I seem to see a restoration path as full gloss black lacquer as a good route, or the fancy labeled high heat rad paints.

My expertise is the 69. It is suede, same as the top of dash and interior cove at the lower sail and back window. Until further refuted, I will say the color of the ‘68 is “suede”.

Engine side of the heater box is the Semi to gloss finish.

OK, So I have to Man up and agree I was TOTALLY WRONG, So after Seeing the above posted pic, I climbed under my dash and snapped a Shot of the driver side of my never removed heater box. I made many restoration errors like painting the pass side Rustolum gloss black back in 1980's
ALL (Well a lot) the restorations I saw/seen owners restorer's painted the inner box   a semi or gloss black.

Please note the faded X marking on the end and the rust on the inside.

So, What is the spray bomb equivalent, avail to replicate this or are we back to the Dash Paint scenario?

I used SEM Texture Coating #39853. Duplicates the original finish perfectly. I’m not home for the next couple of days but will snap some pictures and post them when I get back.

Sure Bob what you used matched as stated but for people reading this if one is just top coating after careful cleaning a semi-flat or similar paint that matches works fine. Since the texture on mine was not disturbed by any sanding or damage it just needed a fresh coat of paint to give it the new look. The good news is also the texture makes it one easy piece to top coat easily. Let me know when your coming down this way Bob.

Wow thanks for that product recommendation.

I will pick up some from my local paint supplier and work on my heater box (Disassy I assume I can just shoot this over my existing semi gloss black and it might give the correct appearance)

Yes. Agreed Chick. That’s exactly what I did on mine as well. Just a light mist coat of the SEM paint really brought it back to life.

I’ll let when you know when I’m headed down your way. Waiting for that phone call from East Coast Muscle any day now. 😁

Rustoleum makes a textured black paint as well. Seems more like the original finish. But and a big but is how the paint is applied. Spray distance seems to matter for the textured paint

I wonder how the Dark Pewter Textured 7221830 - 12 oz. Spray would look over a black base? (Cancel this)
* I bet the age, reflection & thin application is giving it a silver-gray tone that should not be used as reference for restoration

Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Black Textured Textured Spray 12 oz.(7220-830)

Here are a couple of pictures of my restored heater box using SEM Texture Coating #39853. As Chick pointed out, I just cleaned up the box and gave it a light coat of paint. I'm very pleased with the results.

I just used Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Black Textured Textured Spray 12 oz.(7220-830)

Scuff, Degrease, Mask, preheat in sun, Shot with spray bomb and some "dry" spray technic

It Does have a slight silver hue to the refractre' affects of the texture that is exagerated by camara flash or sunlight.

Better than the Semi gloss I had on it before, Thanks to all for the suggestions.

I will add the white crayon "X" on the driver outlet using a paint stick after the paint sets.
(Especialy due to the observed condition (practice) from my other 68  with it's orignial finish and markings build a week later LOS [12E & 12D] )
