My father acquired this motor from the original buyer in late 69 or early 70 from what I can remember. I believe the car was made into a race car like so many Camaros did. I know the original owner died in Vietnam and my father got the engine from the father. The car probably ended up in a crusher which would break many hearts.

I have to learn how to use this site !
-
To Jon Mello this is the motor I was talking to you about.
-
looks good. I think your exhaust french locks- (the upside down U) should be be bent down though. It is on 69, so I assume it should be bent down on 67?
Also is the sticker on the valve cover 302 only thing for 67?
-
All the pics I have are up even the 69 .
-
I am not sure about the sticker but I know the 67 had them . It's had to find original pics of these motors.
-
If you look at family survivor post, 69,s did not use the French locks. Nice looking motor. Through it on a test stand and fire it up.
-
If I had a test stand I would break it in before I sell it. Thank you for the compliment.
-
I don't currently have access to the AIM on my phone, but I was pretty sure the locks were used through the 69 model year at least. maybe longer?
-
I did not check the AIM just noted seeing the pics in the recent post.
-
I can't find one picture with those locks in the 69 AIM. I'm not real familiar with 69's or their AIM though, just can't find it in there.
-
1968. Ed posted this a long time ago.

More photos here which are mostly 69 related.

Ill work on finding some 67 Z photos but it'll be a while.

Don't think you'd see that detail in the AIM, since the manifolds were installed at the engine plant. Might be in the overhaul manual?
Were they just/only bent to clear when smog tubes were present?
-
OK I just went through my archives of pics, (and most were pics of 69). I see the french locks on all V8 motors, BUT I think you are correct Pete, it looks like they are only bent down on the motors with the SMOG tubes installed, to provide clearance for them.
*I cannot say for 67 and 68 if it was a sure thing though
So I think for your 302 the french locks being "up" (unbent) would be correct, as long as it was not in a car from california, or going back into a california car that has smog tubes.
Sorry for the hassle... :P :-X

Beautifully done motor!
-
I believe in 67 an MP engine application code suffix was used for 302s with A.I.R. for California market. Since he has an MO suffix he should be good to go.

67 & 68

Did anyone notice there is no lift hooks on the engine .All the research I did no engines had any hooks. How did they lift the engine ???
-
The picture of the 68 engine above you can see the lift point back by the distributor. All engines I've ever seen had lift hooks, Left front & right rear...Joe

No lift brackets in 67: http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=1578.msg78979#msg78979
-
Thanks everyone . I kinda thought they had someway of lifting the engine in 67. I am just going to use the 2 center bolts to remove it from the stand onto a dolly and wrap it up.
-
Very cool! Glad to see you get it done.
-
A few more pics of the little terror lol Hi Jon
-
So what are the plans for this motor?
-
The motor looks fantastic.
-
FYI alt fan should be black if it is the correct one for the engine and dipstick should be natural finish. Engine looks nice btw.
-
I wasn't sure about the fan because I have seem them both ways. That is the original alt but it was full of rust. How did they stop them from rusting if it was a natural finish ?
-
Thank you Shane for the kind words. The original plan was to try and find a body but I have given up on that idea. I could have sold this motor many times over the years but I always wanted to finish it as it came from the factory to the best of my ability. Its been a long hard road to finish. I am going to sell the motor so someone can enjoy it. I have a 68 SS 396/375 that I bought in 1975 that I am going to restore plus I have other projects I am doing for other people.
-
I have not seen any 67s with clear zinc or dichromate fan. Only 68 and up. They didn't do anything to the stick. Also I would be interested in getting all the info you have on your L78 as I keep a database of 68 L78s.
-
I've never been an art collector, but if I had the dough I'd collect this motor because it looks like that to me. It'd be a nice piece for my garage LOL. But hopefully someone would enjoy seeing it drop into their Camaro when you sell it. If it was a 1968 350/295 I'd be all over it. Best.....

I bought a Large version of this incorrectly labeled 67 as it is a 68 w/ locks
Great project Original Poster of the thread.

It also has other errors, which makes me wonder if it was an early mock up for advertising purposes. But I'm not as experienced as most on here.
-
And our course it has the Pcv and breather in the valve covers. When looking at partial engines I always look for the hole behind the intake to know it is pre 68.

Bingo. You can't use advertisement as a guide for assembly line correctness. This has been echo'd many times here from William and several others. Don't get me wrong it's very cool but not correct.
