Title: Original GM part?
Post by: 67conv6cyl on March 23, 2018, 11:14:36 PM
I have seen this exact fuel cap on many 67 & 68 Camaro’s, even in vintage photos of cars when they were new. Is this fuel cap a GM part?

Maybe I have lived a sheltered life or I just have a bad memory, but I don’t remember seeing that gas cap before.

We used to sell that type or one like it at NAPA in the 70s. I think Stant made them...Joe

This guy apparently thinks it's factory.

Here it is again, as a Stant product as mentioned earlier.

And here's a generic AC cap which is similar

Thanks,    I see it is an after market part.
I have seen lots of these on cars over the years. When there is not an SS or RS cap on.

If you look at my car on the CRG 68 page, an early picture of the car shows one just like it.  I can't tell if it has a lock on it, but remember that some of these early pictures could have been near the oil crisis of '73.  Gas was hard to come by and "entrepreneurs" found that stealing gas from other cars was easier so a lot of people had to get locking gas caps or when people were siphoning they tossed the cap and many were lost.

Yes that is the Same one on your 68.  Apparently lots  of car had them back in the day, that’s why I thought they may have been an over the counter GM part. However I now see they are not.
