Title: Convertible header moldings
Post by: volvotech on February 16, 2018, 12:32:05 PM
I have to change my header moldings.
Mine are rotted out and beyond any repair.

From what I understand, the aftermarket ones have some fitting issues.

I found a set of originals on ebay that need to be redone:

Do these look original  or are they aftermarket? Is there an easy way to tell if there are no markings?

I had him send me pics of the ends, but I don't know enough about these to tell.

I'd prefer to go with original GM due to the fact it's an L78 car

Thanks

need to know what year you are restoring as there are differences in the finish between years

From what I have seen, aftermarket moldings have their name stamped somewhere. But, I haven't see too many to say if that is 100% accurate. I am able to pick out repros at car shows within seconds because they all have the same fitment problems at the area where the top and pillar moldings meet.

I had my originals re-chromed by a local shop here for $150 (and yes...he does use copper if needed). But as stated earlier, the year will determine if it is bright chrome (1967) or satin (68-69).

Mine a 68 so it's got the satin finish.

I'm not too worried about the finish right now because if I buy these, they will have to be redone anyway.
It's more the fitting of the molding.

I saw the other post already.

When you look at the 67 aftermarket where the end piece is welded on, it's not a nice fit. And the first picture i posted has the same crappy look to it. . But is doesn't have the messy spot weld marks. That's why I'm not sure.

Do factory ones look like that, or are boths end nice clean looking with no gaps where the ends are welded on?
