Title: 1969 space saver spare hook mount location?
Post by: abiddle on January 12, 2018, 10:46:09 PM
Was the location of the 69 coupe hook mount different between a standard spare and the space saver? I tried to replicate the instructions in the AIM, and its definitely not possible from where my hook mount exists. Does anyone have a picture of how the N65 is supposed to appear in a 69 coupe trunk? Is this why there were different trunk mats available for a camaro equipped with the space saver spare, because the cutout was in a different location?

I'm attaching a picture of my N65 displayed wrong Wrong WRONG. I imagine so few people will know its wrong, but now I know its wrong and it will bug me.

Another thing I noticed in the AIM, it shows the inflator canister nesting inside the wheel against the base. But maybe due to the canister retainer being too long, the canister doesn't nest inside the wheel. Anyone have an original retainer?

At least my spoiler-less deck is finally correct with my rear antenna. No one likes it without the spoiler except me...

Thanks Eldon, much appreciated. That's my 69 scout still work in progress. I figured once I get the camaro finished I would spend more time with the scout, but I seem to still be futzing around with the camaro.

Looks great without the decklid spoiler, nice clean lines. Mine came with D80 originally, so that'll stay, but now that I am older I much prefer the understated look of a Camaro without F&R spoilers.
Now back to the spare: I recall when researching the length of the correct J-hook for my car, that there were different factory configurations for coupe, convertible, full-size and space-saver. Unfortunately I can't help with any hold-down bracket location dimensions.
However, a couple of observations on your picture (I realise you probably know all this):
1) I believe the spare wheel was intended to be placed upside-down in the trunk, i.e. with the valve stem pointing down - maybe this helps fit the inflator can?
2) Jack mast was to be installed on a diagonal angle, touching the passenger wheelhouse and the other end fitting in the angle bracket near the forward trunk center.
3) Tire should be touching the seatback and the passenger wheelhouse.

Thanks Tm - yeah I tried all of that, and now it occurs to me that I should have taken a picture of how that looked. Placing the SSS back against the wheelhouse and the wall, the hook is not even close enough to reach even with the wheel properly face down. And the hook is way too far fwd and the shaft angle back toward the rear of the trunk if I tried to place the wheel properly is drastic - the shaft is not up and down, which is when it dawned on me that maybe the hook mount was located further back for an N65 car?

Thanks on the spoilerless deck appreciation. I knew camaro guys would get it, so I need to hang with a camaro crew.

I too like the no spoiler look. I guess I'm bored with belly button Camaro looks, spoilers, cowl hood.....Joe

Deck lid looks awesome!!!

Your car is now one of kind in my book. A beautiful Garnet Red SS with no spoilers. Spot a pic of your interior with that cool looking tachometer for us.

(BTW, I gotta say how nice that Red looks ... 8) )

I miss my red 69

I'm a little disappointed Austin, I was waiting for you to flag the jack straps as incorrect for the N65...

For those that don't know the story about this tach, it was on the car when I bought it 15 yrs ago. I thought it was just junk, so I tore it out and threw it away - leaving screw holes in my dash carrier where the tach was mounted. After a few years I started to really get interested in originality, and discovered this tach was a 69 dealer accessory. So I had to buy another one to replace the one I threw in the trash. Well 3 actually, just so I could make a working whole one. Most expensive piece of junk ever, its pretty much useless. But it does light up and the needle moves.

Not true, I love it. Spoilers are way overused

Car looks really good. Nice to see one without a rear spoiler.

Re: the SSS. Ask on the Firebird forums. The normal spare was SSS. Optional was a full-size.

abiddle,  My car is a convertible, so the position of the jack may be different in a coupe. The jack in your picture seems to be positioned too low.  Here is a picture of my original spare decal.

Coupe is different mast position from either of the Convert diagrams.  Coupe is at an angle.  OP - The space saver spare tire/jack stowage instruction decal is different than than the regular full size spare instruction decal. See UPC N65.

BTW - The AIM UPC-10 for a convert jack stowage looks rather different than your picture.  Maybe your sticker is early vs AIM being late?

My 1969 car is an early car, 11D of 1968.  The AIM UPC -10 is for a full sized spare, not space saver.  The AIM picture for convertible with N65 (space saver spare top of page 407) is very close to my original Jacking Instructions in the above picture.
