Title: cooling fan and sticker mark on trunk deck
Post by: Tx-Z 302 on October 28, 2017, 09:21:58 PM
this fan was in what was left of my trunk in a box with other odds and ends parts, not sure how to tell if its right or a production date, all i find is an "H" on the hub area and "front".    the deck lid has glue for a sticker, im not sure if it signifies anything or if they all had a sticker placed there?

'H' is for Hayes-Albion, which was an OE supplier to Chevrolet. More here: http://www.camaros.org/coolingsystems.shtml#fan
Some fans were unstamped whereas others had a number on the blades. That article via the above link should help ID yours.
Trunk lid adhesive residue is either from the jacking instruction or positraction (if that RPO was fitted) warning label.

Following above reply, just checked the trunk lid on my car and the jacking instruction label is in the center, like the one in your first picture, and the positraction warning label is on the right (passenger) side. The 1969 AIM also shows this arrangement under G80 sheet A1.

That's the correct L78 and Z28 fan. Don't let it grow legs

Does that 5 blade fan fit other engines? It seems I have seen more of them around.

It does have the appearance of the correct L78/Z28 '68 fan blade, but the proof is the bolt circle (should be 3-1/4")and clutch openings. The lo-po 5 blade with the 3.00" BC is marked the same, looks just like it except for the difference in the BC's and a smaller center hole. The fan clutch (non-Eaton) could look the same for both hi and lo-po applications, only the bolt circles tell them apart.

Steve

Gary you're fortunate that your car still retains the plastic cap on the left hand shock thread - originals seem to be made of unobtanium!

Yes, when I first found that on the left shock, I was upset that the right one was missing..  :)

I found one of the shock plastic caps when I cut the left side quarter panel off my new 68 Camaro project last week. It was laying down between the quarter & the trunk drop off.  :)

i need one of those fan blades if someone has one for a reasonable price. mine blew apart at the pure stock drags. '68 L78. i attached a pic but don't know if it will show up.

Wow!  I've never seen a factory steel fan blade come apart before!

in this pic you can see where it was cracked to the right of the right hand bolt. it just let go. luckily it went down and to the right in the area of the lower rad hose.

A good welder can fix that. Not sure I'd run it at the drags though....

right, ok for show car but i would not want to have it hurt someone down the road. i was very lucky it didn't hurt me or anyone else. could have been really bad had it happened on the track. we were doing some spirited driving in the pits checking something out and it let loose. check your fans, guys.

Looks like 3-1/4 BC to me, markings correct. I'd venture it's the genuine article -

Paul,

I take it by the two washers under the bolt heads that the bolts likely bottomed out before proper torque could occur - wonder if that affected the fatigue that ultimately broke the fan. Bent or loose on the clutch probably accelerated the breakage for sure, especially if it was cracked on one side.

Kurt"s right - I'd have a competent welder repair it and put it away (or street it) - they're just too hard to come by. Run a lo-po at the drags if you want the appearance; the diameter and pitch are the same, and they sure are easier and cheaper to locate (also reproduced).

Steve

no the bolts did not bottom out. i just customarily use a flat and a lock on this type of attachment. clutch was purchased new by me and has seen lots of duty. all ran very straight and smooth. i believe this fan is original to the car. i'm not going to weld it. it's wall art now. i'll find a used one someday.
