Orphans - documentation or VIN-stamped drivetrains - in search of the original cars => 1968 - Orphans => Topic started by: 68lowered on October 12, 2017, 01:01:23 AM

Some years ago, I purchased an almost complete 1968 Z28 engine, complete except for the heads, carburetor, distributor and camshaft. It was removed from the original vehicle when a problem occurred with one of the heads and the person who removed the engine sold it to me. I was originally going to put it in my own 68 as it has a highly modified 62 Corvette 327 engine but reconsidered after deciding to go further away from original with the suspension and drivetrain. I want to, if possible find the car it came out of as it would be better to have a Z28 engine as it was originally shipped. The block has been tanked and checked and I have a lovely set of Cosworth pistons that are matched to the block.
Engine pad is stamped: 18N4631xx V0624MO
Block casting number: 3914678
Block casting date: F 20 8
All I know otherwise about the original car was it was sold in Maryland and the owner (I think) gave the car to his son after the (tamer) replacement engine was installed. Is there any way to get an idea if the car (or a date matching original) is still out there? Any registries of Z28's that would help identify a candidate?

Without the full VIN there's no way to know. We can check the database for you, but we'll need the last two digits of the VIN.

Do you know what dealer in MD sold it? Do you have contact with the guy you got it from?

No reason not to post the VIN on the engine and every reason to post it.
