Title: 69 Camaro Rear Wheel Well Plugs
Post by: Edgemontvillage on August 10, 2017, 03:30:06 PM
I'm detailing the rear wheel wheel wells on my 1969 RS Z/28 restoration project ("Brooklyn Z") and was unable to locate disassembly photos of this area. The wwells have received color overspray and now need to be undercoated. I'm conversant with the undercoating process however need to confirm the location and type of plugs originally used in the three, 3/4" holes inside each rear wwell. Quarter panels are original to the car and I recall that my original plugs were a combination of Caplug BP 3/4" recessed style plugs similar to those used on the cowl (2 x 1/2") and on the firewall (single). The other type of plug used was a body plug style plug also found in other locations (floor pan, bottom of trunk drop offs). Below are photos of both types of plugs (web sourced photos). Below also are photos of Eddie M's Cortez X77 Sept 69 Norwood build (mine is a 2B Norwood build) which show only the body plug style plugs used in all 3 rear wwell hole locations. What style (and mix) of plugs were originally used in rear wheel wells?

Lloyd not sure if it was your car being referenced, but Mike P's build thread touched on this area, and may be of help:

I do recall that there was a difference between the style of plugs observed on LOS cars, will check my notes.

Nice pick up Tim, "what is lost is found"! Thanks!

As Tim's research uncovered (nice work Tim), deep in a TC build thread (Post # 3130...) were photos of my original rear wheel wells and plugs.  As shown, the 2 rear plugs are Caplug BP 3/4" recessed style and the single, forward position plug is a body plug style. Unlike Eddie's Cortez Z plugs which are all body plugs it has an embossed PN.

I've seen both types used and others that used all the rubber type. And as Tim was thinking the LOS cars had the plugs put in after and NOR cars prior to undercoating. Good pics to post again!

An original example; 1969 Camaro 307, 60K miles, never apart, Norwood car originally registered in CA, showing all body plug style wheel well plugs (per Eddie M.):

By the lack of posts I take it most members don't have much interest in this subject!

Here is a very original 68 Z/28 survivor (Rich, "ALLZS"), I don't have the build details, showing a Caplug style wheel well plug:

My 12B Norwood 69 SS. Looks like the Caplug type. Hope this helps.

1968 LOS 12D
Only shot I could find from Teardown, I however have a baggie marked rear wheel well plugs that has a combination of the two styles.

I was not sure "IF" your title was for 69 info (data) only, but then you posted a 68 so I figured I would add this photo.

I'll throw a curve ball in the mix.  My 12D Norwood 69 is still original and unrestored in this area.  Driver side has cap plugs in the front and the single plug in the rear is a body plug. However on the passenger side all 3 plugs are original cap plugs.  No body plug in the rear on that side of the car.

Good observation Jim, as I wan't seeing many contributions of '69 examples I included a '68.

Thanks John, first example I've seen of the Caplug type plug used in addition to my 69. Thought it might be an outlier.

My 08D are like these Lloyd. I'd post a pic of it during dismantling, but flickr won't let me from my phone.
