Howdy all. I've read the 3 year old bumper jack posts, but didn't see my question answered there, although the question about the gray on the base and hook are answered.
Can anyone tell me the correct color of the mast itself - I saw it listed as silver cadmium in that thread (and that looks right by my memory), so can anyone suggest an off the shelf color that would be right or at least close??
My car isn't a concours car - though it's an original car with a 19 year old paint job (in lacquer and orig LeMans Blue), and I'm the original owner.

As an alternative, can anyone suggest a paint removal method that won't damage the original finish underneath (yeah - I was the genius ::) that painted over it ~25 years ago!).

I don't think that a chemical paint stripper will harm the zinc coating... as long as you don't scrub too hard with an abrasive... Or you could use lacquer thinner which I am 99% certain won't harm the zinc coating...

Thanks GaryW. I'll give the lacquer thinner a try, seems like the least destructive. Suggestions on what method - apply with brush, soak, etc?? I'll definitely be gentle :P.
I'll post the results, with pix if possible.

I don't think a brass bristle brush would hurt, but if the handle is plastic, the lacquer thinner will likely dissolve it given enough time... :)

Thanks GaryW! I was thinking along the lines of a small brass bristle brush as well. I'll find one and a container, and some of that Rustoleum Light Gray tomorrow. I'm even considering a bench top blasting cabinet (not for the jack) too.

I'd apply it to a paper towel. Then wrap the paper towel around the jack shaft and then wrap plastic wrap around the paper towel. Give it a little time. A brass brush sometimes leaves brass behind.

So far, so good! Spray paint is coming off well. Been helping it with a paint brush, and in very limited areas on the base, hook, and mast - some 0000 steel wool applied VERY lightly. Time is a bit of a problem, so about 1 hour on the mast with the Paper towel/plastic wrap, then helping it out a bit. Several areas on the mast have deep rust damage, so I'm considering some matt clear for protection. Most of the original gray on the base, hook, & jack mechanism survived except where I had to use the steel wool on rust. Couldn't find either of the grey colors suggested, so just made do with the closest match I could find. Had a brain fart and forgot to take pics in the before state, but will when I get done. Sorry 'bout that.
All that rust was apparently the reason I painted it all those years ago. At least now I know(?) I wasn't 'totally' nuts for doing it! :o

Soaking in evaporust will remove the rust... THEN you can clean and clear coat... :) satin...
