Title: What transmission would have come standard with 67 4N coded BBC?
Post by: HAMBO on July 09, 2017, 09:08:46 PM
Hello all,

I am considering purchasing a 1967 396 SS, coded 4N on the trim tag. There is no transmission option coded on the tag (only field under code 2 where I believe trans options would have been, is 2R, which I believe means rear speaker).

Currently the car has a floor mounted TH 400. I was told it was originally a column-shift transmission, and was changed to floor mounted TH400 during restoration. Looking at the car there is evidence of the prior column shift.

I wanted to check, whether there was indeed a standard column-shift available for the 1967 BBC (ether 3 speed or TH400) that wouldn't have had a transmission option listed on the trim tag?

Thanks for any help.

My '67 396 325hp came with a column shift turbo 400 and custom bench seats. I know the car since new. Turbo 400 was only available with a 325hp in '67. There was a white with gold custom interior column shift car for sale in Hemmings years ago. Could this be it?

Thanks maroman. May I ask, did your 67 come with the '2Z' option list on the trim tag? Car I'm looking at is red, not white.

Nice! Do you have any pics of the car and tag?

Column shift TH400 is possible.

67 Chevelles with the 396/325 hp engine could be ordered with a Powerglide trans.  There is one local here, column shift - it also has a bench seat. Not common, but they were produced.

There is a car in the lower mid west thats been for sale on & off over the past few years. Originally Gold/Gold IIRC but now its White w/ Blk and it is supposedly 100% numbers matching 325HP Auto on the column. Bench seat w/ center arm rest car. It might seem odd as we look at it today but back then, it wasnt a "muscle car" as much as it was just a "new car" and someone ordered what THEY wanted. So, I wouldnt doubt the authenticity of a column shift 325HP for a moment.
