Title: RPO D96 together with RPO DX1 ?
Post by: lemarin on July 03, 2017, 10:26:41 AM
My car is an early 69 RS Z22 (9C). In 1969, every Z22 car arrived with D96 fender pin striping.

But was it possible back then to have a second set of stripes ordered for the same car, together with Z22 pack ? I'd like to have the DX1 front end stripes on my car and keep original look, but since my car is an RS it should have them both, right ? Someone can confirm that please ?

I have founded some pictures of what seems to be an original car

My car is an early 69 RS Z22 (9C). In 1969, every Z22 car arrived with D96 fender pin striping.

Not true. Dependent on other options and when the car was built. For example very early in the model year a Z/28-RS would have been built with D96 striping. Chevrolet quickly revised that. An update to the Showroom Album dated September 12, 1968 states:

"FENDER STRIPING (RPO D96, Body-side accent stripe) included with Rally-Sport and Style Trim Group. Not available with Sport Striping (SS or RPO D90). Available in combination with Front Accent Striping (RPO DX1) or with RPO Z28."

The January 2, 1969 revision further limits D96:

"Not available when Camaro SS, Special Performance Package or sport striping is ordered. Included when Rally Sport or style trim is ordered."

DX1 is not mentioned so it is safe to assume both were possible. I have recently seen original photos of a '69 with both.

Thanks williams for the very useful infos. Not so many people have restored their RS with the D96......

I have already found the painter who will do it.

I'm happy it's not getting Z/28 stripes!

William, I already have the Z28 stripes on my car, it was done by the previous owner. I want the car to look as much as possible original, like it was from the factory. For the next paint job probably next year, I'll have:

Flat hood back and trunk lid without spoiler installed, DX1 stripes painted up front, and the front lip removed as well. As an early production car (9C), it could not have the cowl induction hood, and the rear spoiler (and front lip). And it's an RS, so I'm trying to have stripes that this car could really  have from the factory. There's too much SS around with the hockey stick stripes....so DX1 is different.

Well i would like to see some before and after pics, to compare.  :)

Sounds like your car will look quite unique, returning to the stock configuration.
Way to go! ;)

William, I saw your post, any idea on what production date of cars this would have went into effect on?
OP's car is a 09C, so I am guessing his would still have been early enough, by 10A, would it have only been one set of stripes?

The only Z/28-RS I am reasonably certain was built with D96 striping was 09B. If I had to guess I'd say by 10A D96 was no longer included on Z/28s. However the revision states it was optional so others may have been built. By January 1969 D96 was not available on Z/28.

Chevy did include D96 striping on Z10s & Z11s.

Thanks William.

Lemarin, do you by chance know the build date for that orange car in the pics?

@BULLITT65, so far to make a long story short, I imported the car from Tennessee 2 years ago. Car is all matching numbers, LM-1 350/4 barrels, TH350, RS.

Here's how was the car when it arrived here, in Quebec City:

Engine:

I had the engine completely rebuilt to original state, except for the ignition which is now electronic.

Since this picture, I had the radiator core seal installed on top, and the cooling decal switch to the top fan assy. I should take a newer picture.

I have P01 original hubcap (NOS) installed, together with Wide Oval redline repro tires. Also 4 NOS Mudflap installed last spring. I have a second set of original wheels FC coded 14x6, that I'll have paint in yellow very soon, and already bought a set of NOS Dogdish. I will have to buy a set of F70-14 Goodyears Wide Tread to put on, to make a second set of original tires.

Anyway that's. where I am in my project....

Oh yes, now I remember when you first got the car. Wow, amazing work under the hood. I hope you were able to recoup some of the costs by selling off all the chrome items.
What inspired you to run the mud flaps? ( unpaved roads nearby you?)

I think the dog dish caps with the goodyears will look excellent. Were you able to acquire any pics or docs from early on to know what wheels and tires it had?

I sent the seller an email, trying to get more info on the car.
thanks

Unfortunately chrome parts gave me just about 1 Grand....I could have them cleaned up, and sold separately, for more money but had no time to do so.

For the flaps, no, there's not much dirt on our roads here, except spring time where a lot of sand remains on the asphalt. I simply realized that some of the dirt was quickly sticking on the rear fender so I decide to go OEM way...

For the history of the car and the wheels, I do have the names of the five previous owners. I also have the original Protecto Plate, but nothing specific about the wheel. The car probably had the most common setup, white line tire  and dog dish, but I decided to explore different existing possibility. I have found a woman, with the same name of the first owner, living in the same area as the car was sold back in 1968, but I'm not willing to call her. She's probably in the late 70's....and so many people can have the same name in the US...

BTW, according to POP, the only option the car had was power steering. No mention about A/C...but my mechanics said that it couldn't have been added at the dealer since it is installed just like the factory does...through the firewalls. Error on the POP ? Possibly...I also kept the power brake added by a previous owner, just changed that crappy chromed brake booster loll...but still on drum brakes all around.

Together with the engine compartment rebuilt, my mechanics installed RPO U17, together with the clock and tach. The repro tach burned out twice...grrr, still have to find the reason why...and install a third one !

And keep us posted about this Camaro for sale...it seems to be original paint on her...with a very rare stripes/combo option.

Another picture I've found of a Camaro with 2 different sets of stripes, is this one with D96 and hockey stick stripes, together. But it's an advertisement from GM...maybe they just want to show few different options on the same car/picture ?

And it's just too bad they don't make the Goodyears Wide Tread GT in F70-14 size....they just reproduce them in 15's...for the Z. I don't want polyglas, so I'd go for the wide tread with F70-14 white letters raised like this one:

That's a very early 1969 print ad using a pilot or styling car. Not representative of production.

Work is in progress: Rims are at the paint shop for powder coat (black inside, yellow outside), and wide tread tires are ordered!

Little upgrade done today on the wheels ! Even if the color match is not 100% perfect, I'm quite satisfy with the fine result. D96 striping should be done around mid-september.

Lookin good!  8)
...I also have a complete set of NOS mud flaps that I intend to use on my ZL-1 tribute car! :)
The dog dish and steel wheels are already on my Hugger orange X44 and I´m also going for the DX-1 stripes but I want to all of it in vinyl but I haven't find a single supplier for that, strange I guess when a paint template is almost the same thing?
I´ve spoken with Phoenix Graphix but they weren't that interested, that's a pity for them I guess....! >:(

Does anybody here know where to get a correct set of DX-1 stripe in vinyl, NOT for painting?

thanks hgger69, I really love the look!

For the mudflap, they are quite cheap even in NOS (about 150$ US per pair), and they fit just perfect and protect exactly what need to be protected.
