Title: stickers on core support and fan shroud 0f 69 z/28
Post by: Chris_Pisane on January 27, 2007, 08:11:36 PM
Hi I was looking on ebay and saw an orange 69 z/28 car that had 2 stickers on the core support and one on the fan shroud. I know one on the core support would be the timing sticker. Is the other a high octane fuel sticker? the one on the fan shroud looks like a sticker for the antifreeze.None of the stickers are legible from the pics. If  all these are correct, what is the proper placement of them.thanks

The only one that is correct is the "tune-up" label. The other two do not belong there.

It is usually on the core support although occasionally located on the fan shroud as on my last '69 Z/28.

I checked several vintage magazine tests and it is left of center in the photos.

I am almost certain I have seen the tune-up sticker location delineated in the 67 & 68 AIM's.  Will have to see if I can find the section/page.

Pic from my former 02A LA built Z.  My Dec. '68 LA built RS had it on the rad shroud.

Found the tune up sticker location for 68 in the AIM on page 20.  UPC 0/B1.  Shows sticker to be placed 3.5" to the left (driver side) of the center line of the car.  BTW, I didn't find in the 67 AIM and I don't have a 69 AIM to reference.

I believe the tune up sticker should be on the drivers side of the core support, the coolant sticker on the pass side.

The sticker placed on the shroud seems to be more common on the LOS cars and/or AC cars due to the seal that runs across the core support.

the coolant sticker on the pass side.

The coolant sticker belongs in the drawer. Not used on US sold 69s.

I just received my copies of Jerry MacNeish's two books and here's what Jerry has to say about the ignition timing decals:

1967 Z/28: "The 1967 Z/28 was not equipped with an ignition timing decal."

1968 Z/28: "This decal was mounted on top of the radiator core support (driver's side)."

1969 Z/28: "The 1969 302 and SS350 ignition timing decal was mounted in two different locations. Factory workers either installed it on the fan shroud or the radiator core support."

I recommend anybody with a Camaro (let alone a Z/28) get these two books. I haven't put mine down since I got them. Outstanding job Jerry!

August '69 issue of Car Life mag tests a cross ram / JL-8 Z28, and has the tune up sticker on the fan shroud- for reference. Sounds like both locations were used as JM states.

In this thread regarding firewall painting, there is a picture of JohnZ's original Z.  There are two stickers on the core support.  Any idea what the 2 stickers are?

Here's a photo, but you can't really see the separation due to the dark body color - it's generally along the sealed seam between the cowl and the floor pan, just below the cowl tag.

At this point, I would just like to find an emissions sticker that will actually "stick".

The third one is peeling up, all of them have been within a day or two. :(

The one on the driver's side is the emission/tune-up sticker, and the one on the passenger side is a coolant sticker; you can also see the GM of Canada oil change recommendation sticker where the heater hoses clamp to the inner fender; the car was sold new in Canada, and has the original GM of Canada documentation.

Thanks.  I was wondering if this was the reason.

What about 67 cars sold in Canada.
Would there be any stickers on those?

I've found the glue on stickers is just like paint.  It sticks better if the metal is "warm" --the higher above 50F, th better.

I just went by what the 69 Factory Assembly Manuakl had in it for placement of stickers. It showed the coolant sticker so I put one there. I guess I will have to go peel it off.

I did the same thing, Jonesy.  Funny, the coolant sticker stuck just fine :(

Where in the Assembly Manual did you find the coolant sticker?

John

I am pretty sure it's in there. Either that or I went by pics of existing cats that I thought were done correctly.
I will have to look it up to find it.

Going on memory, I thought it was towards the front of the assembly manual where it shows sticker placement.

In my copy of the '69 AIM it only shows the "tune up sticker"
It is shown on UPC 0 , sheet B1 which has page #11 penciled in on my copy.
There is no mention anywhere in my AIM of a coolant sticker.

I have never seen a "coolant" sticker on any original survivor cars or the cars used in road tests when they were new.

I see listed in the AIM on the option index sheet A2, under Bumpers & Miscellaneous UPC 14
something called -
*V48   ENGINE COOLANT - Maximum Protection
Would that be the imfamous sticker ?
I have a friend who swears he has seen it on two survivor cars at the nationals.

V48 was for Canadian-delivered cars, and was included in RPO W84, "Build to Canadian Specs", which also included "Additional Fuel For Delivery", the GM of Canada Oil Change Recommendation sticker, and RPO ZQ7, which was the GM of Canada Owner's Manual and a bi-lingual warranty folder.

So what lables would be on a 67 Canada delivered L35?

Dunno about 67's - maybe Daniel has some info on that.

Currently I have no lables.  Always thought 67's  did not use them.

My GMOC paperwork reads: V48 Anti freeze - increased protection
so maybe there should be something. ???
I would be currious to find out.

Has anyone other than me seen a red sticker on the core support of a cross ram 69 Z that reads THIS VEHICLE NOT INTENDED FOR HIGHWAY USE--OFF ROAD ONLY.  ??      Thanks

Probably not, since the crossram didn't come from the factory, and the dealers would not have been required to install such a label if they did the installation.

Thanks Mark, But back in 69/70 I was 21 yrs old .  I did not need glasses to read. (ha ha) It was put on at the factory and it was red and that is what it said.

Sorry, that label was never factory installed because that manifold was never factory installed.

Nor was it included, referenced, or shown in the illustrations, instruction sheets, or parts list that came with the over-the-counter cross-ram package; there was no such label unless someone created one "for effect".  ::)

Can anyone add any input on AC equipped cars which have a rubber seal on top of the core support.  Does the emission sticker stay under the seal or does the sticker move to the fan shroud?

Thanks

Mike

Mike,
I'd say on the shroud.  In the 68 AIM when you look at C60/B3, which shows the seal, it would have covered the sticker.  Ed could verify this one for you.

There's nothing mentioned in the AIM, but I went and looked at the cars in the database and found several with the sticker on the shroud.

Here's a good example of a semi-original car (aftermarket intake, but fairly stock other than that). Note the radiator seal still attached to the support and the placement of the sticker.

68rs327conv, I'm going to take the AC sealing question to a new thread here in restoration.
Also, look here: http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=1171.0;all
Ed posted a good picture of the seal going over the brace in that thread.

Ed, are there any more pictures --especially ones that show other seals involved with AC sealing?
