Title: 68 302 open element air cleaner
Post by: Tx-Z 302 on April 28, 2017, 02:58:16 AM
I have read every searchable topic on here about air cleaners plus I have googled every way possible to find info.

I still have several questions. Thanks in advance for info and answers
1. Is the 67  assembly  line unit the same as 68?
2. Are any other hp cars the same?
3. Is the 6423907 the same as assembly line unit or just otc correct replacement?
4. Am I worrying to much about the wire cleaner

I can get a reproduction cheap enough but the articles aren't very flattering ?

Here are links to two cleaner kits for the 1068 Corvette (Part#6423272).....this part number is the same for the 1968 302ci engine as listed in the 1968 Camaro Parts Catalog.

I see that the 68/69 302 have one part number & the 68/69 396 have another. I wonder what the difference would be? They're both open element.
Thanks, Joe

The difference is probably in the base of the air cleaner, allowing the BB AC  to sit down lower around the carburetor since the BB engine is larger/taller...

Umm, might be correct Gary but I was thinking it was angle/dimensions of bottom tube for hose to valve cover but never checked ours to determine what differences are.

Check 68-72 Vette and see if the angle is the same as the other that changed..  I just happen to be selling an open element assembly on ebay now.  Was told it was originally from a 68 Vette.

.. :)   It was a 'guess' on my part, mostly due to the fact that with the cowl induction AC's, the small blocks required an extension ring of an 1" or more to get up to the hood, while the BB's did not...?

Thanks for the info.   Is the silk screen  on lid supposed to be curved slightly or is it a square ?  I've seen both?

68 is curved.

68 is curved.

Not the entire year. From THIS THREAD (http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=14941.msg132810#msg132810):

67 - LOS -  04B -  Black    - curved print
67 - NOR - 05B -  Black    - curved print
68 - NOR - 01D - Chrome - curved print
68 - NOR - 03D - Chrome - curved print
68 - NOR - 04D - Chrome - curved print
68 - LOS  - 05D - Chrome - straight print
68 - NOR - 06A - Chrome - straight print
68 - NOR - 07C - Chrome - curved print
69 - NOR - 01C - Chrome - straight print

Still not enough data points to make this conclusive though.

Are you looking for more examples of the silk screening on the 69 air cleaner lid? I have mine. I can get a pic if it's needed. Guess you would need build date as well, which is 10B, Oct 68.

Jimmy, we're more interested in the late 1968 model year. Specifically from April, 1968 to the end of July. This seems to be the time period when the label changed. So far what we've seen in NCRS is that ALL 1969 model year cars had the straight print, but not to deter you, yes, please post what you have. I would be surprised if it were curved, but I've been surprised before!!

Ed that list hasnt been updated in a while.  I have a few more data points that are not on that list IIRC.  But yes there are a couple that are straight but they could not be confirmed as being original to the cars.  Everything I have seen to this point 68 is curved.  I was trying to reply quickly earlier and I should have been more detailed in my response.

Build date of the car in question would also help in getting a more "correct" response as well.

Yeah, I know. And that's a big problem with research. Getting people to submit their data AND making sure it's correct (i.e., ORIGINAL air cleaner lids). It's gets more and more difficult as time passes us by.

Yeah I admit I have slacked off on the lids..  Not that I was asked by CRG to keep the info..  It was more for my knowledge. ;D

Is this block or curve?

Nope thats straight.

This is curved as provided by the link I posted previously in this thread...

Yes, when ti comes to research, it's better to have too few entries with correct data than a lot of entries with questionable data. That's why it sometimes takes YEARS for us to write reports!

So I posted a pic of the silk screen of an open element cleaner from eBay. The seller says it's original maybe from a 68 vette. Its block according to the guys on here.   So its repop or nos?    He's asking 500 I offered 300 he came back at 400?  If it's repop I can get a new repop complete for around 200?   Opinions please !! And thanks.

Yes that's one of the two I'm looking at.  My question is , well one of my questions is.... Is it legit? And he says 67, 68, 69 survivor I thought by kurts chart he posted in this thread that there was a difference in the years? Which one is this?

Umm, might be correct Gary but I was thinking it was angle/dimensions of bottom tube for hose to valve cover but never checked ours to determine what differences are.

I'm not saying I know the answer but, I did save a post about the differences in the original bases of the cowl induction air cleaners which I re-read recently.  It said that the flat bottomed bases were the originals as opposed to ones with ridges which were repro or for Chevelle and the bend in the pipe that went to the valve cover that had two 45's,  possibly were for the ZL1's to clear the rear pump of the double pumper carbs.  Otherwise it was a 90.

But it makes me ask now, Is there a way to tell if the open element cleaner tops or bottoms in this discussion are original or repop?
BTW, I have an original lid with the straight stencil.  Unfortunateley I bought it off E-bay and don't know for sure what it came from.  It was said to be 68Z but there is no proof.
