Title: Source for 67 Muncie housing parts?
Post by: Mike S on March 06, 2017, 04:03:23 AM
Anyone know of a source for 67 Muncie shifter body parts? I'm looking to replace 2 missing ball bearings and spring metal sleeve from the reverse lockout assembly. This is the early design so I want to keep it intact if possible. The spring metal retaining sleeve broke and let 2 balls out somewhere in time and the plastic orange cap is pretty much deteriorated so it didn't retain the balls. No wonder reverse lockout felt so sloppy.

Thanks,
Mike

You might try Danny,s Transmisions in Nc 336 317 2270. He mainly does 4 speeds but rebuilds shifter also.

I'll give them a call. I got myself the replacement (updated)spring loaded lockout 'button' assembly but I found that is about 1/16" wider than the original shifter body hole. So, I got a later shifter body from my friend that has the same shape but larger diameter hole and gave it a  phosphate dip it this morning. If I can keep the original lockout despite this obvious design flaw (spring band snapping and balls falling out) I'd rather go that route.
Thanks, Kelly!

I have the plastic orange caps. Bought lots of them from the original manufacturer years ago. Marking are slightly different but that doesn't show. I don't have my notes but the bearings aren't anything special. Did you try a hardware store? I bought a bag of 100 from McMaster Carr but that's probably overkill for 2. Years ago there was an article on rebuilding these shifters and they used a piece of rubber tubing in place of the spring sleeve. I can look that reference up if you're interested. Martin

Hi Marty,
I was looking at a local hardware store for spring sleeves and found one that just may work. I'll see if they have ball bearings.
As for the cap, if you have any for sale, I'd be interested.

Thanks everyone all for your replies!
