Title: 1969 Camaro Z28 Underneath Sheetmetal
Post by: MarioZ/28 on January 20, 2007, 06:20:57 PM
I am in the process of doing a rotisserie restoration on a numbers matching 1969 Z/28.
I am doing the last bit of welding and will be ready to shoot primer on the vehicle shortly.
My painter and I were discussing the color of the floor and trunk sheetmetal from underneath.
I am very interested in keeping this car correct.
I have seen the sheetmetal in question a primer grey color to a black similar to what goes in the engine compartment.
Does anyone know the factory color?
Thank you
Mario

When I pulled up my carpet in my '69 the floors were grey. As far as I can tell nothing has ever been done to the floors. From underneath, I think mine would of been flat black.?.?.

This has been discussed a lot recently.  Those that are in the know tell us it should be primer with varying amounts of overspray.  The cars with full body color on the underbody are over restored - may look great - but not the way the factory did it.  It would have cost too much in both man hours and materials (paint).

Followin is a quote from the link below by JohnZ

I think I pointed out in my "First-Generation Camaro Assembly Process" paper that the underbody appears as primer, with varying degrees of color overspray from the side guns that sprayed the bottom of the rockers, as William noted. Some have more than others - my '69 02D car has a LOT of body color on the underbody. Not many Chevrolet folks ever set foot on the Fisher side of the plant, but I was one of them - I worked closely with Fisher Body Production Engineering during the year prior to GMAD taking over all the Fisher/Chevrolet assembly plants.
