Hello could someone tell me how many months prior to a car being built is the carb date. For example if car was
built in june 1968 would a February or March be correct. Also what carb came on car rochester or carter. Or you need the build sheet
thx mike

Mike, Carter carburetors were not available on Camaros in 1968...

I thought Carter was building Q-jets for a while or am I mistaken?...Joe
-
The story was when rochester couldnt supply enough to gm carter was building them and they did build them for awhile and if i remember they started in 1965 - 1970 i think dont hold me to the exact dates. Does anyone know about the date codes for june 1968 camaro
carburetor
thx
-
Carter built Quadrajets were built and used for many years - including 67-9.
>However, Carter was also licensed to build the Quadrajet as a secondary source, and supplied carburetors to not only Chevrolet, but other GM divisions as well.
June car probably had a May or June carb on it (depending on when in June).
-
Both of my '67 L35's (04B & 05B) have their original Carter made Quadrajets.
Mike
-
Carb for June car, yes most likely dated in May. Early June carb possible if car is a late June build.
-
Thank you KurtS and Mike. A friend told me that it is possible that you can use a carb built
in March or April also. He said you can go back as far as 2-3 months just trying to clarify this.
THx
-
Kurt S carter used the carbs on alot of chryslers also same years.
-
LOL I forget where does it tell your car has a carter or rochester. Is it on the POP or on the build sheet
Alot of questions from 1 guy eh kurt LOL

My thinking the date depends in part of the engine popularity so I'm sure the carb date would vary.

Was the car in question actually built in June of 68?
-
I remember seeing several Carter built Quadrajets back in the day.
I seem to remember them saying "Carterburetor" or something like that on the side.
Anyone remember that, or am I dreaming? ;D
-
Maybe this?

-
That may be all it was. I was thinking it there was some kind of a play on words.
Maybe not. That was a long time ago!
-
BCMiller no the car was built october first week 10 A thats the build date ?
-
Ok build date of car is 10A - what year of car is it? If it's a 69 is it 10A of 68 or 69? What engine?
-
1968 camaro rs ss 4 speed convertible I know the carb is 7028213 which they all are. Im not sure if it came with carter
or rochester. Actually the date is more important to me.
thx
-
Hi you know whats funny I have a 1967 carter on it know. This carter came off chevelle you ask how I know the gas line comes
up the back of carb. The camaro is in the front. Although the car runs great would like to get it as close to stock as
possible as most of us. This carter is different than the later ones this one was used for the 2 four barrel setup its wider. The newer
one looks identical to the rochester even uses the same rebuilding kit the newer carter is stamped the same place the rochester is
the other ones have a round emblem like i think riveted or something on the front driver side with the date for example L8 O8 N7.
thx

Yes, I have a faint memory of seeing something like 'CARbureTER' or similar...? may have been on the older Carters rather than their QJ...? I'll look at some carbs I have and take a photo if I see it..
-
It could have been on the carbs themselves, but I don't recall that.
It WAS on some of the advertising...
-
I may have that number carb, but I have no idea what date it is. Let me do some checking...

That's probably what I'm thinking of, the blending of their name into the carburetor word.
Yeah, Gary if you see that on a carb itself please take a picture! It seems like that's where I saw it.
Thanks!

I've got a Rochester built by Carter on the shelf at the house, marked Carter on the body. I'll have to wait until I get home tomorrow to get a pic, but I'm positive it says Carter on the casting.
Regards,
Steve

It came with a quadrajet. The Carter and Rochester versions of the carb were identical.
10A build?? Then why did you say June?
From the factory, it probably had a Sept carb on it.
-
My 10B LOS 68 SS has a September 67 date on it my 2 cents
-
Kurt i was just giving example. But your opinion it would be september but what about august or july
would that work or is it to far away
thx
-
The carb date code is a month/year format so you don't really know when in the month it was made. First day or last? That can work in your favor if trying to match up a date. Looking at my 04B LOS car (build date April 17th, 67) with the L35/TH400 MZ (smog pump) motor, the 7037210 carb tag date is C7.

I'm saying what most cars would have come with. I'm not saying right or wrong. You can put on whatever date you want.
My 10B LOS 68 SS has a September 67 date on it my 2 cents
Exhibit A.

Kurt how do i post picture of my desktop.
thx

I KNEW I'd seen that 'wording' on an actual Carter Carburetor before because I've never had a NEW ONE IN the box and didn't recall ever having any Carter brochures/info in my hands... :)
Yesterday I was over in my shop; didn't have my camera with me unfortunately, but I remembered to check some old WCFB carbs I had.. and sure enough.. right on top was the cast in word... "CARbureTER"... I'll try to get a pix next time I'm at that shop, but I have several of the fifties Carter WCFB carburetors, and I'm fairly certain that they all had that wording on the carbs.
Several (maybe 30?) years ago I was down on the MS gulf coast visiting wife's relatives and I always check out the Auto Ads in their local paper when I'm there.. and I saw an ad for some Classic Chevy Parts.. I called and spoke to the seller, got his address (Long Beach, MS) as I recall.. and went over there. In talking with him, I found out that his father working for Carter actually was the mechanical engineer designer of the Carter WCFB carburetor.. :)
In the interest of helping educate our younger members a little... :) WCFB which stands for 'Wrought Cast Four Barrell' was the standard type of 4-barrell carburetor used on Chevys (and all GM's I believe and Chryslers) during the fifties. In the early 60's, a larger/lighter carburetor was introduced and becoming used on the higher performance cars of that era... That carb was the Carter AFB, which stands for 'Aluminum Four Barrell'...
I've also read that WCFB also represented the company founder's name.. 'William Carter Four Barrell'... but in view of the later naming of the AFB, I'm still of the opinion that WCFB stands for Wrought Cast Four Barrell' due to the nature of it's construction.. :)

Great info! I thought I remembered seeing that logo on an actual carb at some point.
Thanks!
-
Thats funny i have a carter afb on the camaro now but i believe it is a 1966 chevelle carb. The carb works perfect and actually is
a great carb but im looking to put a rochester back on it. I believe thats what it came with. Ill tell you it looks better than the rochester
and i believe it gets better mileage
thx

Attached is a photo of a '62 Carter WCFB that I photographed the 'logo' of today...
-
Bingo!! That's what I thought I had seen on a carb many years ago.
Thanks for posting the pic!
