Title: repop headers for 67-9 Z28
Post by: aaronz28 on February 03, 2017, 09:54:44 PM
Anyone know of a reasonable source for these Kustom or Bill Stewart Headers?

HBC has em for about 2k   that seems ridiculous  -

I seem to recall someone saying Larry Christiansen was having them done - but i don't know how to get ahold of him or what the price was.

Thanks

Headers were not offered for the '69 model year. They appear to have been discontinued as an option during the '68 model year. The listing in the Z/28 Miscellaneous Shipping List in the Assembly Instruction Manual was removed March 5, 1968.

Aaron,
Yes Larry Christensen is doing repops of the original headers.  He doesn't live that far from me.  They are $1500 when I spoke to him 2 weeks ago.  I'll PM you his phone number.

HBC price seems to be $1775 (including their $25 surcharge for size/weight).
Anyone know if these, or Larry C's version, work with power steering and/or stock back drive linkage?

Not sure about the power steering but they fit great on our 68Z. I purchased ours from Larry several years ago and from comparisons they seem to match or duplicate the originals in a great way. Spent a few hours making my own header gaskets based off an original set.

Some detailed pictures of the headers as they arrived. Again, nice examples!

Probably cost more now than 2009.

I assume these headers are NOT stainless although they look a bit like it in the pics.
Chick, what did you coat or paint yours with?

When I spoke to him he did tell me they work with power steering.  When I asked about the back drive linkage on a 69, he said they "should" which gave me the impression he wasn't sure.

If headers were sold over the counter for 69 z/28 but were discontinued in 68 then what header manufacture supplied the ones sold over the counter? Was it the 67-68 left overs?

As stated previously there were no Chevrolet headers for 1969, either as an option or OTC. All the part numbers out there were developed for 67 & 68 Z/28s and supplied by Bill Thomas Race Cars or Kustom Headers. They will have the alternator mounting bracket on the LH flange, not required for '69. While they may fit a '69, it was not the design intent.

If you really want factory headers, the SCCA did homologate Camaro headers for the '69 season: 3965702 & 3965703. They were designed for the aluminum hemi heads so you will also need those.
