Title: Water Pump 3927170 date code
Post by: abiddle on January 07, 2017, 05:02:00 AM
Could someone help me with this please? It looks like O27 8. Could it be G27?

This came off my 69 SS350, early Nov 68 build. There was an aftermarket water pump on the car when I bought it a long time ago, and then at some time replaced that pump with this one. But I can't remember where this one came from, maybe it was junk parts in the car. Honestly I've lost track, and it didn't matter much to me back then.

And were these painted orange on the car to match the block?

Thanks - Andy

Hard to say for sure. Looks like C 27 9 to me.

That casting number was used for 69 Camaros (see link below to CRG water pump report) and for some other Chevrolet small blocks in Chevelles (probably others too) into the early 70s.

Looks like a 1970 pump and yes, it should be orange to match block

Yeah I agree this is the correct casting and application for a small block (e.g. 350) 68s - early 70s.

I don't see a 9, I thought it was an 8? Debatable if that's a C or a G. Any example pics out there for reference?

I think G 27 8 would be early for a Nov build 68. How far in prior months would the date code of a water pump be normal? I don't want to say acceptable, I really don't care about judging - this isn't a show car. I'm only trying to figure out if this is possibly my original pump.

Thanks - Andy

I also see C 27 9 (March 27th, 1969)

Ok - you guys have seen a million more of these dates than I have. C 27 9 it is. I've tried to enhance the picture and crop it for a closeup.

So unless my engine time traveled to the future for a water pump, this isn't mine.

I have to admit this one's a tuffy, and a better picture would be great, but from what I can see, there's no "leg" in the G (therefore making it a C), and the 8 has a smooth back (therefore making it a 9). But it COULD be G 27 8! It's just too difficult to tell with the current picture.

I would judge the 'yr' to be an '8' character, and the C/G to be a tossup... call it what you want.. :)

Can't be a C (March) 1968 because that would be way too early for that pump. Could be a G (July) 1968 though.

The earliest 170 date I've seen is H 1 8 (August 1st, 1968), but late July 1968 is very possible.

But whatever anyone thinks, a higher resolution picture would be MUCH better!

Ok I'll get a closer pic of the date code next week when I'm on the shop. I have a higher resolution pic but its too big to upload and when I crop and then resize it gets grainy.

Believe it or not I'm a software consultant. Just not with pictures.

If you use Light Image Resizer, you can reduce the file size with negligible loss of detail..  OR you can email it to me at gdwylie@knology.net and I will do it for you (which is quicker/easier than going to your shop).. :)

Andrew sent me a higher resolution photo of the water pump, which I'd adjusted and used Light Image Resizer to get the file below 200 kb.. Here is the image attached. I think the image is pretty good of the casting, but still difficult to tell what the letters and numbers are (as is true on many cast numbers).  Perhaps if Andrew took a brass bristle brush and cleaned around the characters to remove some of the surface rust, it *might* help to make the characters more legible...?

C-27-8 would be my call.

C-27-8 would be my call.
That's a long style water pump, so March 68 would be too early for that casting (also see Ed's earlier comment).

Horrible casting, but I'd say C 27 9....

Where was your engine assembled? Being that pump is Tonawanda cast, although parts went back and forth, it is more likely to have been on a Tonawanda block.
