Title: VIN search issue
Post by: KurtS on October 19, 2016, 05:25:18 AM
I've recently come across a search problem that's baffling me.
You used to be able to search a VIN via Google and it would find it anywhere, if it existed. That no longer works, which devalues the orphan listings.
123377L100013 is on the orphan docs page. Search it (or any other VIN on that page) via Google and nothing comes up. The only way to find it is via the forum search function. Or via Bing.
Anyone have any insight? Anyone want to reach out to Google and ask why?

Yahoo search seems to work okay too (see below). Looks like it's just Google that has a problem.

It's definitely odd and something has changed.

But 123377N100001 still works for a Google search.

So if I type my VIN into a google search, will it find anything? Or is that only if the VIN has been used or listed
online in some way like in the forum?

Yes, if your VIN has ever been posted online, it "should" show up in a Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc... search.

You can try it several ways also. like 7Nxxxxxx or 17Nxxxxxx. Sometimes you get different information...Joe

I just did a search for my vin on Google, Bing, Yahoo and nothing came up. Spent a few minutes typing the vin in several different ways including vin# plus N, NOR, nor with no spaces between letters/numbers and also spaced befor and after the N. It use to come up. I hadn't tried to do a search for it for quite some time now.

Someone probably 'hacked it off the internet'...   (Hillary says it was likely Russians!).. :)

Please, let's keep politics out of this (no matter how trivial the joke is).

Anyway, it's not unusual for search engines to clear their cache periodically, so I'm not surprised your VIN may no longer pop up. You can also try the WAYBACK MACHINE (https://archive.org/web/) for cached searches and see if this comes up with anything. Just enter the Google or Yahoo url and pick a date to search.

Hi Kurt.....I reported this to Google Search but have not received an answer yet.....but, I tried it now and it seems to work.  They must have fixed the problem.

I just tried and it's finds this thread and your report (thanks!), but not the orphan listing.

Hi Kurt....Yup, you're right.  Did a little more checking on that thread and discovered that a search request, for any information on that thread, will not return a result.  So that tells me that Google has a problem with that thread.....possibly they have a block on it for some reason.  I would suggest that you contact them.
