Title: steering wheel
Post by: Kev 68 on January 10, 2007, 05:12:05 AM
I'm pretty sure this is the orig. steering wheel (as most of the car is) , but people have told me it's not camaro but impala.
Have had the car for over 20 years.It's a 68 rs/ss 396.

It doesnt' look like anything I've ever seen, but I could be wrong....I'm a bit of a newbie, especially on '67-'68 cars....

It is a little hard to see in the picture, but it looks like the wheel that was used for the N30 option and that was included in the Z23 and Z87 options.

Daniel asked me to verify, and yes, this is the 68 N30 wheel, also included in Z87 custom interior.

Oh - and BTW - almost all of the repo suppliers are confused about this wheel.  They list the wrong N30 wheel in their books.  I tried to get several of them to listen, but they didn't seem to care enough to try to make a correction.  For example (see link, but not sure if this link to Classic Industries will stay fixed) but if you look up the CI 68 deluxe steering wheel, it is wrong.

Here's what a 68 N30 does look like...

If it doesn't have any cracks or bad scratches, you are lucky.  There are still some of them around, but most are cracked.  And for exactly the reason that Rich mentioned, they are gradually becoming rare.

Sorry for the bad pictures I'm just getting to Know my camera.
Thanks for the info. Phillip's picture is real close but mine has an ss insignia instead of the GM.
Here is a close up. (hopfully better quality)

The 68 N30 wheel did have the appropriate insignia for the car as ordered.  Thus, your 68 RS/SS has an SS insignia.  The picture I posted is a 68 N30 off a standard coupe, so it has the bowtie.

Correct on all counts. Wheeels were also color keyed to interior color.

Kev68,

The 68 Assembly Manual under UPC N30/A1 clearly shows this deluxe wheel, including the difference in emblems (insignia) I mentioned above.  Also, the Oct. 1, 1967 revised P&A 34 lists your black deluxe steering wheel as:

6.51 Wheel Assembly, steering
68 Camaro w/del. wheel......9747536

The deluxe steering wheel also came in gold, red, turquoise and blue in 68. If your car has RPO Z23 or Z87, it came with that option.  If it doesn't, then it was one of the 9178 N30s ordered seperately in 68.

I had a 2 68 SS396 cars back in the 70's and 80's and both had this wheel.  Never realized that it wasn't the standard. wheel.
