Title: Seems like a pretty good price
Post by: bertfam on September 17, 2016, 07:17:15 PM
Not mine, but I asked what the date was on the motor and the seller said it was 10-68, so anyone with an early to mid 69 might want to check it out.

I agree.  GOOD price, if you need it!

Looks like the bottom of the housing got bent up a little, but that can be fixed. Unless it's SUPPOSED to be like that! I've never really paid attention. John posted pictures of the defogger on his original Z, but I can't find them right now to compare. But I think $400 is a pretty good price for what appears to be a complete assembly.

Ok, I found JOHN'S PICTURES (http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=1753.msg10948#msg10948), but his grille isn't the same as the one on Craigslist, so maybe it's not from a Camaro? I'm not up on the 69 Camaro C50 option.

For comparison, HBC has a NOS '67-'68 Camaro rear window defroster kit for $895.00

Anyone know what car or year this grille is from?

Ok, I went back over my notes and yes, from the factory, all three year Camaro Coupes used the rectangular grille like the one on John's car. However, there's a possibility that the one in the Craigslist ad "might" be a dealer installed accessory. These were designed to be used on multiple models (in 1969, the dealer installed C50 Rear Defogger - P/N 993514 - was also used on the 1969 Nova).

It "might" also be a Pontiac piece, or even a Buick or Olds grille, I just don't have enough info to know for sure.

However, the motor date of 10-68 definitely indicates it's for a 1969 model year car.

After more research, it appears my theory about it being an "accessory" looks pretty good.

The 1967 Dealer Accessory C50 Rear Defogger (Coupe), is P/N 986906 and there's an NOS ONE ON EBAY (http://www.ebay.com/itm/272372894448?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT) right now with the same grille as the one on the Craigslist ad (see first picture below). Note that this part number was ONLY used on the 1967 Camaro, unlike the 1969 part number, which was also used on the 1969 Nova.

The 1968 Dealer Accessory C50 Rear Defogger was P/N 987244 and was used on the Camaro, Chevelle, Nova and full size cars (except station wagons and convertibles). I've included a picture of the 987244 Defogger in the second picture below, and even though it has the rectangular grille, notice the instructions showing both the rectangular AND the "rounded off" grilles.

Good detective work!  To make it correct for a 69 you need the kit from your first post as it has the correct switch for the 69, and the grille from your last pic ^^^^

I've never seen that grille with the rounded corner on a factory installed setup.

I also found THIS AUCTION (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nums-67-1968-Chevy-Impala-Ss-Caprice-posterior-ventana-defogger-Parrilla-Adaptador-987248-/121823979076?_ul=AR&nma=true&si=StW9wEyVELdVTYDRzncTVd%252FovH8%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557) (see picture below) where the seller states:

Quote
Rear defroster defogger package tray grill & air deflector adapter plate.  Unsure of exact application. Please check picture and part number before bidding. Unsure of exact application.  See pictures for best description.

Gr# 9.778. Part no. 987248. Fits with kit # 987244.

Not sure where he got this info from, but the 987248 grille was discontinued in 1970, so it's possible.

And yes, the FACTORY installed C50 Rear Defogger used the rectangular grille.

Kurt, I'm assuming this was a factory setup with the rectangular grille?

Maybe $300 or less would be a better price then, for the original post of the CL ad.
