Title: Harry Mann 68 L78
Post by: NAPA68 on September 01, 2016, 01:18:39 AM
I just thought I would introduce myself on this website (at the suggestion of Darrell Cook). I have a 68 L78 Camaro that was purchased at Harry Mann Chevrolet. While I would perhaps post this in the originality or unrestored section, this is a Day 2 car by definition. Moderator's, feel free to move this wherever you see fit.

I have been rather active on the Yenko.net website. Here is the thread I have going on the car......

http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/595522/harry-mann-68-l78-l88-camaro#Post595522

This car is not completely unknown. Some of you are rather familiar with the car. I am in the process of documenting (if I can) a gap in the history of the car.

I (and my Wife) will be at the MCACN show in the Day 2 Invitational. Feel free to say hello!

If you take the time to read through the thread, you will again see I am on the hunt for information revolving around the 2nd owner who may have drag raced the car around 1971 before he was killed in a car accident. If you have a suggestion as to where to look, ask, dig, investigate..........................whatever................................please chime in or PM me.

In advance................thanks for a great website that is void of the drama.

Tim

I am still kicking myself for not looking at this car when it was for sale in Ohio. Great car!

Yes, welcome Tim. Do you know where it may have been raced? That may help.

nice Camaro with interesting story
I see where you are looking for original 1968 speed parts

the  Hurst shifter that you would get in 1967 or 1968 is hard to find.
Hurst changed the 67-68 Camaro shifter 3 times (that I know of)

The 1st shifter was made from welded parts vs the new design's stamped steel neck
It also used a different  chrome stick

The second design used the stamped neck with the early 4106 chrome stick with large Hurst letters

The 3rd design used the same stamped neck with the  4106 chrome stick with smaller Hurst letters

In the SYC thread I believe it was Lions drag strip in CA.

Joe,
would you happen to know if the Part number changed along with the shifters? If so do you have the part numbers?
   Thank you,
         VT

That is what is suspected. While the whole racing thing is left to folk lore, the car does appear to have had ladder bars, slicks, and some hard launches. This thing is not quite a virgin ;)

If you are talking about Lions Associated Drag Strip in Wilmington - it might be worth your while to check into any Facebook or other sites that might have old photos to look through.

This is the best one I've found, has lots of pictures (and I check back every so often in the hope that a pic of my car will turn up there):

They are relatively original to the car. Here is a pic from 68

Yes the original 67-68 Camaro aftermarket Hurst shifter would be a different number as it used the old Hurst number system before they went to the 391-xxxx number used today. I have one and have some research on them including original assembly instructions.
It also used a different number chrome stick.
The 2nd design used an early 4106 stick with larger Hurst letters but looks same as the modern 4106 stick with small letters
