Well let me play devils advocate here. While I am a big fan of the U.S., and like the idea of "Made in the U.S.A. with *parts manufactured in the U.S.A", (not just assembled in the U.S.A. with imported parts)
I think the reality is there are many factors of why GM and the US government did the bail out. ( I wish keeping the pontiac brand would have been part of the deal)
I think part of which was GM doing things inefficiently in so many ways and it caught up with them. I think GM could have survived without the bailout, it would look much different, and maybe only Chevrolet would have been left, maybe they would have had to sell a majority  of the company to China to keep business going, ( I am sure China would have been buyers). Would you want China being the biggest shareholder/owner of GM? ( Besides the technological advances china would have made, what a huge foothold in the U.S. that would have been if China pulled that off!)
So seeing GM trying to dig into China through marketing, alliances with the communist party, and its mob bosses maybe be some GM Execs view of an end around on establishing a U.S. brand presence in China. Do I like seeing the Cadillac symbol on a flag with a hammer and sickle ? Kinda makes me think of  Orwells 1984 or some bad dream.
So while this isn't my vision of how the bailout was to work, I am glad that China does not "own" Gm outright, and it looks like right now GM is only controlled by the mighty dollar, which if you are a capitalist, is the way it ought to be. A nationalist would likely go bankrupt in todays economy. I am sure Harley and other strongly identified U.S. companies still face tough decisions when it comes to this.
It can be hard to be Nationalist and a Capitalist at the same time in the world we live in now...

Just my 2 cents,
(from a millennials perspective)

It goes way beyond GM - we have lost so many manufacturing locations to China, Mexico and elsewhere over the last 40 years that I'm beginning to think our next generations will be working completely in a service economy; in other words, fast food. China controls so much of our manufacturing base in plastic injection, steel, forgings and castings, and finished goods we'll probably never be what America once was - the world's leading economy based on what we made and exported to other countries like China. As China's oil needs have escalated, where do you think Canadian oil exports go if we can't pipeline them to the lower 48 ? Highest bidder, I would reckon.

Sorry to wax long, but it's a tender subject. We'd better wake up to the reality.

Regards,
Steve

I agree that we have lost manufacturing jobs to other countries, some of them may have been low skill jobs, but I think the fast food jobs would also be classified as low skill. All these low skill jobs were usually were kids first jobs while they were in Highschool, now immigrants and the undereducated are trying to use those jobs to support a family, and in doing so have demanded higher wages. The Liberal run states/cities have caved, which gets passed onto the consumer with higher prices for goods.
I predict we will see an automated fast food process (think todays assembly line) with maybe 1 employee and a manager, so the fast food giants don't have to pay the crazy minimum wages these people are after. It may be cheaper to have the machines and pay to maintain them, then try to deal with paying higher wages, and unions. So more manufacturing jobs may get created for this, but where will that be?
More technicians will be trained and hired to maintain these machines.
In turn there will be less entry level jobs for our youth, and more undereducated people will go on unemployment or find a way to get on the government dole, so they can work the minimum.

The gap between rich and poor will grow larger, the gap between those that are contempt with what life (government)  gives them, and those that  are persistent and have the drive, and can still attain the american dream will also grow larger.

My wife owns and operates her own business (dental practice), you have to want it badly and work hard to grow it. Truth is less and less americans just do not have that "can do " attitude anymore, and one political party seems to grow in strength by trying grow government, and have a say in everything you do, while the other political party says they are for small business and enterprise, and do not have the backbone to get anything done.

And welcome to the new USSA..  United Socialist States of America.

Oh and dont worry about fast food employees and them wanting to be paid $15 hr or more..  Mc D's and several others are already working on automated fast food systems which will knock the staff down to 1 or 2 people.  You will order from a touch screen and the order will be made by machine, and delivered to you through a shuttle system..  We will see this in our lifetime..  They are already in testing scenarios..

As for China..  I dont think people realize just how much they own in our country..  And Im not talking companies either..

Our politicians (leaders??  Ha!).. have been selling out the United States resources for many years (to enrich or empower themselves!)..  When we have to ask 'Why would they do that?'... the answer is usually the only one that makes sense...   it's to better THEIR OWN SITUATION... and our choices just seem to get worse and worse.. :(
