Title: XT wheel paint
Post by: abiddle on May 27, 2016, 09:05:40 PM
My restoration guy is getting ready to sand blast and paint our XT wheels. Could someone tell me if they were painted black first, then painted body color on the entire wheel (inside, rear and front)? Or does the inside and rear remain painted black, with overspray from the front being painted? Any suggestions I can give him please?

Thanks - Andy

My original 15' rally wheels look like they were completely black and then sprayed silver on the front, with a little over spray through the holes. I would guess the same for yours, but with body color. They may address this on one of the research pages.

Hey where did you find that, how can I find it from the home page - is there some like that leads to more articles? I would like to read through other articles like that. Thanks Bentley!

oops! swerved off topic for a sec. Give credit to our beloved John Hinkley, as it says at the top of the article. Someday when you get time, you really should take the time the rest of us have done and read what is written on the home page. Lots & lots of topics. Each box you click on will reveal more and more facts about these cars. All you have to do is click on that red CRG box in the upper LH corner. Here is a link, if it is too hard to figure out, http://www.camaros.org/   That article is in Technical Articles. Now, get to reading.

(Chuckling at Vince's posted photo and Bentley's 'wheels'... )..

now getting serious, and expanding a bit on the previous responses to the OP...

Most people 'restoring' their Rallye wheels only ask (or are concerned?) about the front and back faces of the wheels, but if you truly want to 'restore' your wheels (as in restoring to factory original new condition), you also need to 'totally cover the wheels in the black primer .. ie. JohnZ states the wheels were immersed in a vat of primer'... meaning the front, back and rim areas of the wheels are totally coated - heavily- with the black primer when they are removed from the vat.

Given that you and I don't have a 50 gallon drum of black primer or black paint to 'dip' our cleaned, stripped and prepped wheels into, what we can do is load up our paint cups with your favorite black chassis or reconditioning black paint (I use the GM version), and apply a very heavy coat to every bit of the surface, front back and rim area.  The silver paint is only applied to the 'front side' (as described in John's paper) but no attempt to mask the other areas was done, so allowing the overspray thru the holes onto the back side is accurate and appropriate.

I've read through this site many times, including the articles, but I admit it was maybe 15 years ago and I didn't find it when looking for it this time, so my apologies for asking. The home page isn't too hard to find, but I appreciate the link and your help. I'm sure you were being funny and not rude, so I will thank you again.
