Title: Fuel lines clips - green coating
Post by: 69z27z87 on May 17, 2016, 05:02:47 PM
Does anyone know what the green coating on the fuel line clips was? I am assuming it was to prevent rusting.... Cleaning and de-rusting the clips has removed most of the coating. Has anyone tried to replace this coating or do most leave the metal bare?

Those kinds of parts with the 'green appearance' (clips and fasteners generally) always made me think they were coated or treated with zinc chromate, but I have no factual proof of that.  If I wanted to renew some of those kinds of parts cheaply at home, I'd clean them and 'prime' them with a zinc chromate primer, which is green tinted.

Testors makes an olive metal dye. I used it on the last set I did.

James,

How does that dye work as a 'corrosion preventive' ??

There are many rust protectors that can be put on after the dye plus how much is a car like this going to be subject to water. Yes, probably moisture (humidity) might be a cause but believe some of the many products available can protect them. Good one James as I had not heard of that one.

Rustoleum's auto metal self etching primer was a perfect match to the color!.... a couple of good coats and away we go!...
