Title: Headlamp switch - RS
Post by: lemarin on April 30, 2016, 08:59:51 AM
My mechanic recently fix my repro headlamps switch on my 69 RS, together with the vacuum system Since then, when I pull it to the first level, parking lights comes on like it's suppose to, but my headlamps covers opens as well, but without lighting up.

Is it 100% sure that this problem is coming from the headlamps switch? Or it could be coming from elsewhere?

Before the repairs, when I switch to this position, both covers stay closed.

Any idea ?

Sounds like the rubber slider in the switch is 180 off.  Its been a long time since I took one apart, but the vacuum ports are uncovered by a sliding block of rubber/plastic? I think it had a certain way it had to go.

I bought another one from eBay, an NOS one (a way more expensive than the repro I bought). Do you think it should fit ? It's part PART #1995191

While that is the newer replacement and should work, the original is stamped 177 and has some minor differences. As well, be aware that 2 different type switches exist, 1 for no U17 (console gauges)with 7 spades. The other has 8 spades for U17 equipped cars. Here is a link to some pictures of the 191 switch compared to the 177: http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/519673/1969_Camaro_RS_Headlight_Switc

Thanks for the detailed answer ko-lek-tor. I knew for the difference (7 vs 8 pins). Mine was not equipped originally with U17, so I believe 7 pins will be just perfect.

My mechanic made a retrofit of U17 using repro kit from Heartbeat, but the 7 pins should work, as the repro connectors is adding the 8th pins somewhere along....

The 8th pin is just to illuminate the gauges in the console.  The Heartbeat kit simply has a terminal for the headlight switch, that has an extra pig tail terminal on it.  Instructions state to remove the current white wire on the headlight switch, plug in the new white wire for the console, then plug the original white wire back into the pigtail terminal that comes off the new Heartbeat harness.  Pretty simple.

Now I'm having a different problem, with an NOS headlamp switch. It's suppose to be part 1995191. When I switch headlamps On (pull on the lever), both covers close. When I switch the lever to OFF position (push down completely), but covers open. They do the opposite of what they should do. Maybe it's the wrong switch ? Any idea ? Here are some pictures of this NOS switch I bought:
