Title: Hood Insulation "keepers"
Post by: rlafash on April 24, 2016, 02:07:33 PM
Is there a secret I'm missing in order to get new hood insulation "keepers" to stay in place? I believe I've purchased the correct insulation and round plastic push-in "keepers" for my 1969 Z28 The insulation is the thinner molded version which is specific to the 1969 Z28. The push-in keepers are the round black plastic version with holes in the surface. The package was marked OER.
Several "experienced mechanics" and I have attempted to get them inserted properly so that they keep the insulation in place and stay seated. We have not, for the most part been successful as only a few have remained in place.

I have taken a jewelers file and gently filed the raised edge on the retainer stub to give it more Tooth to grab the sheet metal hole, additionally I have added a match in the seam (Void) of the stub to create more (Outward)  grip force, thirdly I have purchased an additional "SET" of retainer to replace the ones that have fallen off and lost over the years, I am NOT a Fan of the generic repop round versions and continue the battle of the Clips.

Anybody have an original hood insulation still laying around? ? ?
I have a replacement hood insulation (when i got the car) and the holes don't line up, so my original clips won't stay in.

I would love to find an original (even dirty) hood insulation to put back on my original hood.

my car was missing its insulation, I put the molded style in as well with those oer clips and I thought they were all in good and snug, until one day I popped the hood and noticed I'm not missing about 4 clips. I think the clips don't have enough edge to get a solid bite on the hood. I also remember a couple being really tough to get to snap, like the insulation was thicker than is should be.

I didn't have any alignment issues with holes in the wrong places, though.

Just for information's sake, not all early Camaro's came with hood insulation.

I am sure it is on the CRG here somewhere, But I was pretty sure all the deluxe interior cars had hood insulation, and all the ZL-2 cars had insulation from the factory. If it was an SS that had deluxe interior than the insulation had extra holes for the weep areas on the SS inserts.
Thats my understanding.

That's sounds correct Bullitt.   With a flat hood, only deluxe interiors got it, or the ZL2 got it regardless.

Unfortunately, '67 didn't have the weep holes in the hood (no tubes) or insulation. On my '67 LOS survivor I'm starting to see rust come through from the inside-out where the weep holes would be for '68 and up. You guys with 68 & 69's have the advantage of having the updates from '67's short comings.

My early (Oct 68)  built 69Z with flat hood came with hood insulation (05Z21AC Style Trim Group). When I bought the car I removed the insulation due to it being worn. Threw the insulation and clips into the garbage. Also threw away the hounds tooth trunk mat, due to it being torn and dirty. Didn't know any better back then...oops.

All 1969 SS's regardless of interior had hood insulation I believe.  I know my L48 w/ standard interior has it.

Ok reviving this to ask a question. According to the hyper table on the CRG all SS cars got the hood insulation as well.

But what if you had a plain Jane car with factory AC, did they also include hood insulation ?

The clips certainly were a challenge for me back in 2018. They are still holding great with never an issue.
Here was the thread back then that visited many solutions.  --->   http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=16256.msg155879#msg155879

I used a small diameter rubber O ring - cut a small piece of it and stuffed it inside the clip in between the "teeth", which spreads them out after insertion of the clip in the hood.
Voila!!!  No more loose clips.
Works every time.
