Hey everyone! My name is Joe, and my grandfather has a '68 SS. It's believed to be a real L78 car. Originally packing a 396 and a 4 speed (clutch pedal's still in it) it now has a 454 and TH400.

Cool! Have any more pictures or details about the car?

Love the cragars

Welcome to the CRG!
Great picture and history it sounds like. Was your Grandpa able to hold onto the original 396 and 4 speed?
-
No, those were long gone. He bought it in '03. The owner in the 80s raced it. Motor is 10.25:1 compression, dome forged pistons, Comp Cams Magnum Hydraulic Flat tappet (.575 lift, .305 duration). Edelbrock C427X intake, Accel distributor with MSD cap and wires. Holley 750 vac secondary. Headers leading to Flowmasters. 3.73 gear. I'd love to know more, but the POP is also long gone.

Welcome and nice Camaro
Correct year - enjoy her.
-
Kurt, would you like me to PM you the VIN? I'm a little reserved about giving it out though.
-
It's been quite a while since I updated this.
Since I last posted, it's gotten a Holley 650 Double Pumper, new HiJackers in the rear, the rabbit stickers in the windows, and I've felt it launch in first for the first time. It's. An. Animal!
I ordered the NCRS report, it was ordered by Fairchild Chevrolet in Lakewood, Ohio. Seems to be a dead end, as the first location is gone, and the second one is still a Chevy dealer, but no longer Fairchild.
Right now, the car's down with a brake pulling issue, and needs a shifter cable. It's going into the shop later this week.

What's the code on the front of the passenger side axle tube?
-
Never looked. Previous owner told me it has 3.73s though.
-
Actually, I just remembered. The axle's been replaced. The car had the brakes catch fire in 2014 and it destroyed the axle. At least from memory that's what happened.
-
OK just wondered. Did you ever get the VIN and trim tag information to Kurt? I help maintain the database so if you want you could send the information to me. Thanks.

I would think that would be memorable. Heck I can even remember back to every teacher's name that I had in school. And that was a long time ago!

My memory is shockingly bad. I remember what happened exactly, I just can't remember if the whole axle was replaced or just the axle. As for the vin and trim tag, I haven't but I should.
