Title: 1970 "nickey" Z/28 RS up for bid 41k original miles
Post by: BULLITT65 on April 15, 2016, 01:34:01 PM
I saw this eBay Auction and although we are a first gen site I know Sonny, Charley and a few others have a second gen.

I have see write ups on this 70 Z, before and seems to be a very nicely restored car. Maybe Charley or somebody has seen it first hand. It looks to be like a car that may have been at McaaN?

Plus the color is one of my favorites for this year, To bad the 69 Camaros did not have an option for it.

that one is sitting an apparent 2-3" higher than one I owned until the mid-80's..  Maybe mine had old springs, and that one has new (or incorrect?) springs??   The car under discussion is a nice car, similar to what I owned except that one is an RS model (split front bumper) which everyone likes.   I really liked my '70, it drove, handled very well (a bit better than the 'first gens IMO)...

Thats a good looking car. I have seen guys with the non RS switch out the bumpers for the split bumper, and I think it actually looks better. The horizontal turn signals sit right under the bumperettes. And you don't have the extra extension on the grill. Interesting that it would handle that much better. I have to think the wider tires helped, but I was under the impression the car weighed more?

Definitely the split bumper look is better (That seems to be a universal opinion)... and yes, many people have 'converted' to them, just as RS front ends have been added to non-RS 1st gens...   :)

I can't back up my belief with numbers, but I've always thought/believed that the '70 was wider/lower than the '69, and that helped the handling.  Definitely the wider, and lower profile tires helped.   And it's natural to assume that a newer generation would include some improvements.  The '70 may also be a little bit heavier, and weight always improves *ride*...   :)

Well I know the doors weighed more. I helped my friend remove his and do a tear down. Man I may've lifted heavier doors but I can't remember when. When we took them apart I understood why, there is a thick piece of channel welded to the skin of each door. This is a 73, but I assume 70 had that same re-inforcement, just in case a armored Tank T-boned you.

Probably not. Those crash standards started in 73.

Not sure how you touch it up, with it being in cast area of the block. Are you suggesting they stamped on top of a number?

Yes, definitely different steering geometry on a second gen. Linkage is in front of the spindles. I agree they handle better and sportier than a 1st gen. A 1970 RS is a gorgeous car IMO.

definitely a deeper stamp. I have seen some like this, and initially thought it looked strange, and zoomed in to try to spot stamp over a stamp situation. After close inspection of these though, I don't suspect it, it just looks like a deep stamp. Some of them like this look hand stamped instead of gang stamped for some reason.
Maybe one of the Moderators or John Z could state why some blocks have a deep stamp like this?

I should clarify the 69 blocks I have seen with a deeper stamp , it was only the last 6 of the vin that were deeper. The 9N was still faint.
I have not seen nearly as many 70 block vin stamps to see a pattern.

I looked at a local 70 and I will see if I still have the picture. the car had an easy to read stamp. I took a picture of it and you could faintly see the original off to the side. that phone had a great camera. the s5 wont focus like the droid did. it looked like the machine shop had marked some of the parts to keep them together but not sure who did the vin stamp. I would like to have a 70 some day but should have got one a few years ago.

Just saw this one on E-Bay, very nice car...has someone seen this in person?  Lots of information in the write up and also like the exterior color.  Starting to see '70 Camaros get some respect and values are on the rise.

If the car is totally all there as it should be, I think someone got a heck of a buy on this one

E-Bay is a funny place, I have noticed even after the hammer drops a good 50% of the cars get re-listed because of eager people who will bid but not buy...
