So as some of you know I am looking for a original set of spiral shocks for my 69Z. (3192477 front ) and (3192851 rear)
Well I ran across these today on eBay. 3192477 and dated late 67 (278 67). He says they are early take offs.
Best thing is the title for his listing does not say Z/28, so they may go fairly cheap.
I know there are a handful of guys with 68Z cars on here, and I have had a hard to locating shocks for my car, so hopefully this find helps you guys out!
eBay auction 321990827747

on it, thanks. Not a must have, but wouldn't mind having. Definitely got a cap in mind.
-
Dammit Jano. Those r too early for your car & perfect for mine..

LOL! Go ahead, I started the bid. Like to see someone off the site get them. Who could use and appreciate.

For the rear shocks, is the P/N 3192831 and broadcast code TM?

Im just messing with you.. I am no where near ready to even consider buying parts for the car.. Buy them and maybe later on Ill buy them off you.. ;) ;D

I have to point out to you fellas... 'The original spiral shocks' after 45 yrs will NOT do very much to dampen out suspension motions in your car! :)
I removed my originals in 1976 after I purchased the car and installed Gabriel Strider (adjustables) which worked much better. I've cleaned and painted those an original appearing 'gray' and will use them. If they don't do their job sufficiently, I've some new Konis in the box I will install! .. and since I'm a long time 'hoarder', I've probably still got the originals deep in a box somewhere in one of my garages.. :). Bullitt keeps bugging me to find them and send them to him!! :)
Anytime I've ever purchased a 'used car' (especially back in those days), the first thing I'd so after an oil change and tuneup is *install new HD shocks*. Factory shocks during that period sometimes didn't even last thru the initial warranty period (which wasn't long).. :)
-
Thanks Gary, would not plan on putting them in actual service. And I'm not real interested in going above my current bid. Like Cook pointed out, several months before my car's build date. More of a shelf item, lol. Next to another Z intake I bought a year or two ago...and the traction bars. Mike S might be interested.

I have a NOS pair but not sure what the application is for. These aren't for a '67 BB unfortunately.
This past thread shows them in reply #2;

All of the original shocks from 67-69 were just oil filled & not gas filled correct? The old Z I have has the spiral shocks still , I thought I would replace them with a nice set of gas shocks when the time comes ....
-
No, they were not gas filled. They were HD shocks so they are a bit heavier damping, and perhaps a little longer lived than std shocks of the day. Maybe JohnZ can give us some actual *values* for the damping etc from the factory specs, but I've never seen any such data to my recollection.

Anybody here get them, I lost interest and did not bid up, looks like he accepted an offer.

Nope, the auction ended with a high bid of $118.49

That was a gift....

Compared to HBC prices. Really thought somebody was going to jump on them off the site. I bid $105 early this week to sort of get it going, no other bids, this morning $ 113 was accepted offer and closed the auction.

yea, I see. Got an email this morning other offer accepted. Didn't pay much attention to the time frame, thought another day left.
$105 (1/28) $115.99 (2/3) $118.49 took it 44sec later.

$118.00 was a deal and half. I would gladly spend that on a set for my 69 if anyone of you guys wants to part with an original set ???
Anyone?
::)
-
Maybe we 68 owners are realistic and wouldnt pay stupid prices like some of you 69 guys.. Just sayin.. 8)
Nah that was a good deal on those.. Wish I would have bid now.. Oh well another time; another place..

That auction was for a *pair*... not a set (of 4) wasn't it Austin????? :)
-
sorry, your right that was for 2. If they were still functional and didn't leak, I still think it was a good deal.
-
Yes, was a great deal... just didn't want you to think you were going to find all 4 for that price.. :)

I won the bid on them, most likely just going to sit on the shelf. I can't believe no one else bid? They look real. I sure they will have to be rebuilt, if anybody ever figures out how to rebuild spiral shocks??
-
There are (or were?) shops that rebuilt old shocks (spiral), but I can not attest to their quality after rebuild...?
This is the only one a 'google' turned up...
http://dansshocks.com/shock-rebuilding/
But I also found some information I wasn't aware of on a Corvair site. Following are two posts from a fella on that site:
1. FYI, straight from the Delco engr. The spiral is in the outer tube which is the reservoir for the fluid. The inner tube contains the shock piston. The spiral was used to prevent the fluid from from becoming airated from sloshing around. Previously there was a baffle in the middle of the reservoir to accomplish this. The spiral was easier than the the baffle to build into the shock. Haven't heard from the person who was going to rebuild them. Jim
2. The former Delco engineer I know is not rebuilding spiral shocks at this time. Too busy with other things. Possibly some time in the future. To rebuild them one has to cut off the top of the shock, fix the stuff inside and reweld the top back on. Not easy. Jim

good to hear, was hoping someone off the site got them.

Thanks guys. Learn something new every day. A while back I talked with I think Apple hydraulics and a couple others and nobody wanted to touch them.
-
there was a guy named Dan Patch that was doing them and had shocks on ebay. I have not had dealings with him and it was pricey. I have a set of fronts and not done anything with them. I assume you shouldnt mix these with gas on the rear or did they with air shocks bitd?
