Title: Help decoding my 69 vin
Post by: 9T4Z on December 02, 2006, 05:07:19 AM
There are a couple of weird things on my 69 pace car... ordered with AM radio and manual rear antenna.  Problem is the antenna is mounted on the front fender.  I read in another post that the antenna was deleted on the rear if you had the spoiler, but it still showed as a $9.50 option on the dealer invoice.  Also another post said that the AM antenna came as a manual telescopic antenna... my car has the fixed mast.  Could this antenna be correct or do I have to look for a telescopic one?

Thanks... here is a pic of my cowl plate and vin if anyone cares to decipher it for me I appreciate your knowledge and interest.

The U73 Manual Rear Antenna option was not available with spoilers. The dealer should have noted the error and requested new documents. Errors like this aren't all that unusual. When a Camaro window label has the VIN entirely printed rather than stamped that is usually the reason.

AM front masts were telescopic, FM was fixed-height.

Gary,
BTW, cool web site!   ;D
Are you going to put pictures of your 69 pace car on your web page, too?  ???

I read in another post that the antenna was deleted on the rear if you had the spoiler, but it still showed as a $9.50 option on the dealer invoice.

Did the rear antenna show on the dealer's sales order or retail invoice that he created, or did it show on the factory Dealer Wholesale Invoice sent to him by Chevrolet?

 ;D

Thank you very much for the input guys.... so the antenna I have is inccorrect.  It is a fixed mast.  It was on the copy of the window sticker as "rear manual antenna" so I don't know about the actual invoice, just the window sticker that was reproduced by General Motors.. I have a pic of it.  So thats all the information that you get from the cowl plate?  Does anyone know if the protect-o-plate provides any other information... or do I just base it on the window sticker?

also I added a link to the pace car at the bottom of my webpage.

You can disregard whatevers on that window sticker as far as original documentation, its a repro.

And a bad one at that.

A39 & A85 did not exist. Many of the ECLs are incorrect; "5ZJ7AG" indicates 14 x 6 rally wheels.

The form is incorrect and the body number is missing.

ok so that really bites:  I can guess that the guy that sold me the car "forged" it???
Doesn't seem to be the type of guy that would do that on purpose but you never know...

Help...  I have the original protect-o-plate... is there information on that which can back track to what options should have been on the car???  It is on my first post picture... inverted so you can read it better...

any comments good or bad are appreciated..

I doubt there was intent to deceive. There are a few guys that offer window sticker re-creations and this is simply one of them.

With the documentation legal mess brewing in the Yenko/COPO world I would put that in a drawer and never display it with the car. If you sell the car throw it out.

I looked at your site, the restoration/car looks outstanding. The protect-o-plate is all the car needs.

Thanks William...

I just had a horrible knot in my stomach, glad I got the protect-o-plate..

(not that I know how to decipher it...)

ps why did you say that A39 and A85 do not exist?

John Hooper's The Conclusive Camaro Recognition Guide has a chapter on protect-o-plate decoding.

The codes may have been used elsewhere in GM, just not on Camaro and not for those options.

For the record Custom Deluxe Belts [req on Z11] were YA1, Front Shoulder Belts were YA3.

A39 and A85 were not 1969 Camaro ordering codes for belts.  They were options, but transparent to the buyer, and not used for ordering; they were used in prior years (67-68).  The 69 YA1/2/3 ordering codes, which appeared on the WS in place of the actual option, allowed the dealer not to have to worry about the various permutations of deluxe and standard, front and rear, shoulder and lap, so that the correct belts would get into the car without a RPO screwup and the order being rejected.

To Lakeholme - you might want to refer people to the CRG decoding page for POP decoding.  It has the latest accurate info.

Whoops!  Sorry, Rich!  That's true... And it also goes into greater detail than Hooper's book.  My mistake!  (I need to get it into my head that folks don't always look here first.  I made the same mistake last week myself.  But then Ed referred me to a report --and again, it was the most helpful info. found!)

BTW, is there information anywhere that talks about the window stickers and how to decode them?

....because I spent two hours going through the CRG POP options sheet... and found A39 and A85.  The 8 page printout did not make it clear that they were 67-8 only.  In fact for the YA1 and YA3 I am referred back to A39 and A85.... so you can see my confusion.

I deciphered my Protect-O-plate.  Numbers all match my drive line.... the 1& 3 on positions ABCD below the Rear Axle Code are offset.... so it can be any of N40,J50,Any Radio or J52 which the car has all of anyway  (PS,PB,Radio,Discs)

So far it looks like I am missing an underhood lamp and have the wrong antenna. (and a crappy window sticker?)

Thanks guys

Admittedly the RPO sheet on site is probably due for a re-load.  We haven't updated it in awhile, and it can be terse and hard to understand in obscure instances, even when it is accurate.

However, a better summary can be found at:

http://www.camaros.org/options.shtml#SeatBeltOptions

If not sure where to look on site, try the Google site search on the home page - it digs out stuff pretty well.  The first two hits on "seat belt" were the two above, but the summary was listed first, and might have saved you some time.

Actually, either the option codes and the ordering codes can show up on 69 WS's. It appears to be a mid year change.

Kurt I am going to try to keep looking into this.... the car was May 69.  I am curious what William used to determine that 5ZJ7AG was 14x6" rally wheels vs 14x7".  I have seen a WS from a car built a month earlier than mine... showed 5ZJ7AH for the rally wheels

Have fun!
Some of these codes have a very oblique relationship with other codes. Lot of work for a little gain, IMO.
