Title: Seen Jon Mello '67 Z/28 today!
Post by: dannystarr on October 16, 2015, 07:50:05 AM
Took a 4 day trip down to Santa Barbara to pick up a nice little used Lincoln SP100 welder from a C.L. ad. Met a guy who's friend is Dave, and has a Cortez Silver '69 Z/28. I mentioned he should get his car inspected and certified by Jerry M. He said why would I do that when I have my friend Jon. He has the first Z/28 ever made. And we used to work at McDonalds together MANY years ago. I emailed Jon Mello and he said that is indeed his buddy. He also mentioned that the '67 Z/28 was at Sunset Chevrolet Dealership. SO.. we decided to take a trip over on our way back home. COOL as hell to see the car! Wish I could have gotten better pictures, but hard to do in the dealership lighting etc. etc. And no engine pic's, as the hood was pinned closed. But I will hopefully see it at the MCACN. Pretty nice treat nonetheless. I wasn't expecting to see a Z/28 on this trip, more less the FIRST one ever made..  ;D ;D D

Jon's 67 is very cool for sure.
Can't believe you didn't snap pictures of Dave's Cortez Silver '69 though Danny!  ::)

Sorry I guess I rambled on and didn't get my point across correctly. The guy {Kris} that had the welder ad has the friend Dave. I didn't actually see Dave's car. Kris told me his friend had it and so I had him text to see who HIS friend {Jon} was. Which turned out to be Jon Mello. I am sure Jon has some pic's of his friends car. Anyway, I am not home yet. Maybe when I get home I can post a couple pic's of the '67... D

Danny - just kidding you, due to my love of CS Z/28s!
Enjoy the rest of your trip, did you take the PCH all the way? Not sure if things have changed since I was last there, but that drive was one of my favorites, particularly the stretch from around Big Sur up to Monterey.

I go to Santa Barbara a lot - my son goes to school at UCSB.   Would like to meet the guy with the Cortez Z someday.     In fact, I'm heading up there this weekend - may have to stop at Sunset Chevrolet on the way back.

Danny, I glad you were able to stop by and check out the Z. Sorry I was not able to show off the engine to you. Here are pics of the Cortez silver car. This was originally driven by an older lady who worked at Danica House in Santa Barbara years ago. It was originally a flat hood, no spoiler car. A friend of mine would periodically do a wash and buff detail job on it back then for her.

Is the Engine, Trans and Rear original to the Silver Z?.. D

I'm only guessing that it is a vent or overflow outlet for the gas tank.

Yes, that is correct.

It is hard to get good shots of the car in the showroom. The lighting is not good for your average point and shoot camera.

If you get a chance to see the 1-hour TV show on the 2015 Monterey Race Car Reunion at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Mike Joy did a 2-minute feature on Jon's Z/28; keep an eye out for the show on Fox Sports 1.  :)

Thanks, Paul. I will have to ask my engine guy again. I have completely forgotten and it's only been a few months!

Paul, supposedly there are 14 quarts of oil in the system.

Thanks, Eldon. I appreciate the compliment.
