Title: Console Gauge Decal Size
Post by: Camarocards on September 15, 2015, 05:50:38 PM
Does anyone know the size of the decal used on the '68-69 console gauge assembly?

Thanks,

Bob

BTW the tag is printed DARK BLUE using a direct impact rubber plate, you could make your own.  Linoleum block print.

The little halo around the PA with (squish out) are indicative of a direct impact printing VS offset, where a metered amount of ink is transfered to the plate which then transfers the image to a blanket then onto the paper (substrate).

The date is from a hand held rolling digit stamp

Bob,
The decal you show is for a 69 (6483354) only, 68 is 6480874 and 67 is 6457859. Put me on the list if you make them for the 67.
You may want to look into instrument cluster decals as they are almost the same but with more variations in part numbers.

Bob,

Excellent info! I was not aware that the '68 decal has a different p/n than the '69. Wonder why the p/n changed since they're essentially the same gauge package?

Yes. I do plan on recreating these decals so this info is very timely. Do you know if the '67 decal is the same size?

I already recreated one of the instrument cluster decals for '68 but as you say, there are many variations and info the on the part numbers are a bit tougher to come by. The one I've recreated is for use with the '68 120mph speedometer and the fuel gauge cluster.

Thanks for your help!

Bob

In the best of breed mentality - now there is only one console and one set of console gauges for 68-69, but the true 68 had a different bottom shell with the scallop edge for the harness to exit being different then the 69 version that survives as best of breed today.

Bob,
67 decal size is 1" x 2 1/2" with black printing. The one I have is not readable but print layout is the same as your 68 decal.
Interesting red 68 decal, any idea what (M)W, G.G. and AC represent? Anyone have an idea.
So far there are 56 decal combinations for 67 and 40 for 68. 8 gauge combinations for each year and 7 colors for 67 and 5 colors for 68.
Anyone have pictures of the instrument and console cluster decals in question?

Just assumptions but M for MPH calibration. AC as in AC Delco. I expect the black is for the gauge cluster face outer rings?

I'd like to take a look at your entire decal for both the gauge cluster and the instrument cluster. If you have a picture of the entire decal would you mind sending me them to me in a PM? It is interesting to note that the '68 gauge cluster decal is orange in color while the '69 gauge cluster decal is dark blue. Also, my instrument cluster decal had "G.G." after the black whereas your didn't...hmmm

When I took my console out there was not a "cutout" in the bottom shell for the console wiring harness to pass through. In Chick's build thread I posted a picture of how the harness was brought into the console underneath the carpet. The "ears" that hold the console ashtray were broken on the top shell of my console so I was forced to buy a reproduction console shell. Lo and behold, the reproduction console (which is advertised for use in both '68 and '69 cars) that I received has a large cutout for the wiring harness to pass through! So it would seem that the reproduction consoles have adopted the '69 console for use in the '68 as well, even though technically, the '68 console did not have the large cutout in the bottom shell. Now how that harness attaches to the "U" shaped bracket is a topic for another discussion!  :D

The instrument cluster outer rings are chrome so I don't think that's what the black stands for. Maybe the it represents the color of the instrument plastic housing??

The instrument cluster decal is more orange in color (I've included a picture of my original in this post). Couldn't tell you what the (M)W, G.G. and AC represent but Brian's guess is as good as any at the moment.  :)

I've sent you a PM for a little clarification on this.

This thread has morphed into a bunch of different topics but all good stuff!!

Thanks,

Bob

Anyone know the color print used on the 67 center console cluster broadcast code decal?
I have one picture but it shows up as a dark green. I do not think that is correct as my instrument cluster decal is black.

Should have asked the guy who's picture that is. ;-)  I thought that looked familiar.
