The link above is from the Trifive forum, but the first post in that thread shows 3 very interested *period* photos from the '70s... Yes, there's one or more first gen Camaros depicted.. :)

That's a 69 VW ad for their used car warranty with a 69 Camaro in "very special paint".

I was to young to have known Bill Parker 4 speeds, but I have driven past that spot a bunch of times. I have seen those photos published on another site where they broke down what each car had for a power train. Very interesting stuff

I'll get one tonight. Was going to make a bench seat-back out of it, but it's got some flaky rust and I think it's better-off as a looker than a "toucher"

I'd say mid to late 90's. Judging by the Sunfire and the 4th gen Camaro.

That 68/69 reminds me of one I saw in a magazine a long time ago that had a mid engine(behind the seats) 455 or something.

That is the Waldo tunnel from SF to Marin. The rainbows were painted in about 1970, in order to brighten up the roadways.

My first SS. Think the pic is from Fall 19 ya 78. Do idea what the tag said or the Vin#. Had black deluxe comfort weave interior rosewood dash and steering wheel, tach and gauges. 350 4 spd. Rear mounted antenna with short spoiler. No air.
Got caught out in snow coming home from my job a grocery store bagger. 35 mph, flipped upside down in ditch. Crushed front passenger front fender and pilar post and roof...though not terribly bad. Could have been fixed, but sold it for parts....Loved those Western Wheels.

What I would do to have her back..lol..Bought it for $2000.00... lol Wish I had at least kept something with the vin#. I assume it was X55 and must have been early. May not have even had x code. Oh well.
Wish I had known what I know now..right? Lol. It was a beautiful car at the time. I was 16..lot of good memories in the year or so I had it....I guess the pic would be from 79. So began the camaro disease.

Another tidy bit.  I fixed up another camaro and used these wheels. It was dark gray primer.  Sold it someone around the Gastonia or Charlotte area...I think winter of 87 or spring of 88 before I got married. If anyone in that area remembers this car please let me know...

Title: Re: Interesting period photos.... :)
Post by: BULLITT65 on November 09, 2019, 12:02:48 AM
I thought William broke down how many were left after the Z/10, and Z/11. Which was like 5300 roughly, to divide up between SS and Z/28.
Title: Re: Interesting period photos.... :)
Post by: william on November 09, 2019, 01:22:00 AM
Hard to pin down how many Z10s in the mix; estimated to be 350-450. There were 10,026 ZL2 hoods; subtract 3,675 Z11s and 400 Z10s leaves 5,951 hoods to divide up between Z/28s and the remainder of SS production. There were more SS built than Z/28s so it is likely SS installation was higher.

Of the remainder, guessing SS 3,764, Z/28 2,187. Don't take it to the bank.

Title: Re: Interesting period photos.... :)
Post by: BULLITT65 on November 09, 2019, 05:27:26 AM
Thanks for the rough breakdown William. I would have though less SS since they came with a decorative hood as part of the package, but I will go with your gut. You have probably forgotten more about first gens than I know.  ;D
I think it was explained COPO didn't figure in to that number, and was separate since it was called out differently for that car.

I don't know if has been proven but some say the first production cowl hoods were on the ZL1 Camaros

Chevy promised Fred Gibb and Dick Harrell they would get one by the end of the year and it arrived on Dec 31 , 1968

The number one ZL1 had its cowl hood changed to a fiberglass hood

this road test article of the two ZL1s , shows number one and said the other ZL 1 is number 5 and it had 25 miles on it when picked up to drive it to the drag strip
both were dusk blue
Title: Re: Interesting period photos.... :)
Post by: BULLITT65 on November 09, 2019, 05:15:44 PM
So was the other hood pictured the fiberglass? is that a somewhat forced air hood? (looks a bit fancy for racing)
Title: Re: Interesting period photos.... :)
Post by: william on November 09, 2019, 09:59:13 PM
What about the COPOs?...Joe

Certain options were included in the total only when they are listed in the vehicle build record. ZL2 was included with COPOs 9560 & 9561 and does not appear in build records [or documents] for those cars. So, not counted. At this time, the earliest known ZL2 installation is a Z/28 at the Van Nuys plant.

BTW COPO build records for both list the L78 engine. The 'official' L78 build total of 4,889 is overstated by 1,066.

The Chevy Show truck semi trailer can be seen in the back

I think it's from Canada because I looked up "cine sphere 3" and says .....

"It's Expo 1967 in Montreal Canada and multi-screen film presentations are the rage of the renowned international fair.  Canadian entrepreneurs and filmmakers Graeme Ferguson, Roman Kroitor, and Robert Kerr actually produced some of the films being shown, but made a decision to create a single projector/screen motion picture system which would equal or surpass the grandeur of the cumbersome multi-camera systems.  IMAX® corporation was born."

I've never seen or heard of 'special paint' applying to Rallye Wheels... ??  so my suspicion is that the wheels are/were painted orange by the owner at some point.

I don't know if it has been documented that the wheels were painted with the special paint color on Camaros.
I think they may have been.

I know of a 1968 Z/28 special paint orange that was bought new with the 5 rally wheels painted orange

Chevelles come with a nice build sheet and have seen special paint with the wheels painted and it is documented on the build sheet

There are special paint taxi police fire military etc cars and trucks and some came with the small hub caps and the wheels were same color as the car

Cool. It's even got orange stripe tires instead of the normal red stripe tires.

Unless, of course, the car is really red and appears orange because it's an old faded photograph that has been scanned and then viewed on a computer monitor.

There are multiple Centennial Chevelles which have their SS wheels painted GOLD per the build sheet instructions SO yes the Camaro could have had it's wheels painted orange at the factory.

I don't know if has been proven but some say the first production cowl hoods were on the ZL1 Camaros

this road test article of the two ZL1s , shows number one and said the other ZL 1 is number 5 and it had 25 miles on it when picked up to drive it to the drag strip
both were dusk blue

The complete history of the ZL-1 engine project at Chevrolet is being researched; the author for this famous track test was interviewed. He stated the test took place on an unusually warm day in late January, 1969. The street ZL-1 Camaro used was definitely the #2 car. The #5 ZL-1 was final-assembled on or about March 4, 1969. Several original photographs from the article were obtained, one showing the #2 car parked in Dick Harrell's shop. A wall calendar set to January 1969 is seen in the photo.

There has been some controversy concerning #5 as raced by Shay Nichols. Period photos show it with a white standard interior; all 50 Fred Gibb ZL-1s had black standard interiors. Gibb dealership records show #5 was sold to Phil and Shay Nichols on May 7, 1969. Obviously, had an interior swap. Last known owner claims it was beyond repair and was junked. #2 still exists.

Looks like it ran smack dab into a pole.  Not sure of location but it surely isn't here in the midwest.  There are mountains in the background.  Notice the car has different front and rear wheels.  Fatter rubber in the back.

Re: reply143. That picture is of my Navy buddy Jim’s Z /28 from an earlier post of mine.  It was, according to him, the 6th Z/28 off of the Los Angeles assembly line. He sold the car back in the 70’s, but still has the original window sticker. I do have a copy. Don’t know what happened to the car. Did Google search of VIN, but no luck.  It was such an early car.The headrests were an option. Don’t know if the spoilers were deleted or just weren’t ordered.  Thx for posting

Spoilers were not included with Z/28 equipment until April 1, 1969. The Car Life Z/28 was not built with them; they were added for the test. It did have stripes.

As in other vintage photos of VN built Z/28s, the tailpipes appear to be painted black.

Let's see that window sticker.

Just a 158 before mine (124379L503829). I am surprised it would be the 6th Z off the line though, since my car is a 10B, and I thought they had been making them for over a month at that point. I wonder how he came to that conclusion?

It was just puffery, a statement made with no basis in fact.

My info, gathered over many years, has 21 VN Z/28s with a lower VIN. That works out to 0.6% so it is safe to say there were plenty more.

Thanks for the pic Charles!

I believe the STD Ratio avail contented with the Z28 was 3.73, so It would appear G80/3.73 would cover line cost of the Posi, then the RPO Upgrade optional avail at an added Additional Cost was the G84/4.10

From that angle it's hard to tell definitively, but it could very well be a match. The center cap does look larger though which might fill the gap to match the wheel in post 168 better. How weird to find those two pics of cars with that type wheel on the rear and what looks like black wheels on the front! It would not be as ironic if they were TT's or Cragar's.

That's probably exactly what it is..  :)    One was supposed to remove those decals when cars were traded or sold, but many/most didn't do so..  This one on my car was put on in 1976 or so... :)

I mounted mine on a piece of plexiglass and had it on the dash when I went on base. Some of the sentry guards didn't like it, but I was never ordered to put the sticker on the bumper. Back then I shaved all emblems, decals, dealer plates and emblems for a clean look. Today, I treasure them.

Considering 67 Zs only had 302 emblems on the fenders, it's definitely not a stock emblem from the factory. Whether it was a Z28 and he installed 68 Z28 emblems on it, or just pretending it's a Z is anybody's guess.

 have been ? I would say it's the late 70's- '80s.

Considering 67 Zs only had 302 emblems on the fenders, it's definitely not a stock emblem from the factory. Whether it was a Z28 and he installed 68 Z28 emblems on it, or just pretending it's a Z is anybody's guess.

1967 Z/28s had no emblems. 1968 used 302 emblems early. In about March 68 Z/28 emblems were used.....Joe

I knew the early 68s had the 302 emblems, and went to the Z28 emblems later, but for some reason I thought the 302 was carried over from 67. My mistake, thanks for the info.

Would this be a pilot car ?

No spoiler delete. More likely it was built before spoilers (RPO D80) were included with the 1969 Z/28 package. Prior to that they were optional for 68-69.

Yes, Beach City Chevrolet was located in Long Beach, CA.

I remember long ago, I spoke with one of the few Camaro experts (that wrote many books) of the day and he told me something that sticks with me......"these cars were made on an assembly line where depending on the day they were built, there are going to be variances - that's the way it is - not everything is going to be spot on".  The QA folks at the end of the line weren't going to reject a car due to a stripe that's off by a 1/4"......

He's right.

Post by: group/7 on December 18, 2023, 06:21:05 PM
I'm in agreement with camaronut, having worked final inspection in a GM plant in Canada, I'd pull a car aside and point out a fault

to my supervisor who'd eyeball it and tell me ship it ! It was more about numbers out the door than quality ! I'd see cars in dealers

and auto shows with faults, that maybe the untrained eye wouldn't spot.

The door to fender gap is likely in the .25 inch range on that "1970" car.  From my recollection, production fender gaps could vary significantly from car to car.   And I've had ten 67 to 69's when they were original.  They built production cars.  Not show cars.  How many restoration shops today custom work the fender and door leading edge by welding on or removing material to get to 1/8 inch gaps?   I'd bet most of the top show cars are massaged in  that manner.

Vince & MO, just for information,  re: SS wheels on '70 Camaros, Quoting Vince's post on Feb. 1st this year " does anyone know the

Here's a couple of scans from the Canadian '69 model year GM vehicle Ordering Manual, dated April 1st. '69,  shows those SS

wheels to be available but Z27 must be ordered. All prices in Canadian dollars, they weren't cheap !

Cool video! It's funny how after doing something like that you get pumped up and your knees want to knock a little, even though you know that you have it under control.

This pic was taken '80 of my '72. Of all the cars that I've had this one and my 396 SS/RS are my all time favorites.

Gotta say I like that hood on that body style! Wonder how it would look with factory Z stripes? Might have too much going on and look better without them. I have seen them with a single stripe which looks good though.

Thanks, I loved that fiberglass hood. My dad owned a body shop so I did all the prep work and he painted it. I considered Z stripes but decided against it due to the contours of the L88 hood vs. the width of the stripes.

On the 2nd gen roll, my Z/28 RS in 1981/82 ish. 4 speed, traded it for a 1967 VW big. Just shoot me.

Funny, I had a 73 full bumper Camaro in 1980. Maroon with black vinyl top and black interior,...front and rear spoilers like yours, but I put a 78 Z28 hood scoop on it.

A friend of mine had a red 70 RS with the L88 hood on it and I always thought it looked perfect on it.
