Title: 69 z Rear Panel Question
Post by: BM2 on September 07, 2015, 12:40:16 AM
Hey guys-

I bought my first 1st gen Camaro a few months ago - a 69 Z/28 which, although in need of a restoration at some point, is a highly original car.  To my knowledge the body has never been touched except for a repaint.  I'm still learning the nuances of these cars and have a question is about the rear body panel.  There are 2 small sheet metal screws between the LH taillight lens and the Z/28 emblem, about an inch below the trunk opening and spaced about 4 inches apart.  From what I can see inside the trunk, the screws don't seem have a function.  Are these factory or an indication that some body work has been done?

Thanks,

The screws are probably from a dealer emblem that was removed.

100% correct on the dealer emblem. Mine was on the car in the same area when I bought it, I removed it at the first repaint in '75 when I installed the ZL2 hood. Stupid thing to do when the original lacquer was in great shape, but I wanted the new paint to match in the days when computerized matching was not even a dream.

Took me a long time to find a vintage emblem - when it goes back on, it will be backed by a magnet -

Get an NCRS report to find out what dealer sold it originally, and try to find one to replace the original.

I like the magnet idea. Then you can slap it on at the show, and then put it back into the glove box when done. If it was me and the screws were already there I think I would just try to put the dealer emblem back on it, and enjoy. (although I have seen some awfully large dealer emblems that make me cringe)

I'd never thought of a dealer emblem, but I'll bet that's what it was.  The size and placement of the screws on my car look just like what cam69aro posted.  My car was sold originally by Capitol Chevrolet in Nashville, so now I know what to look for.

Thanks a lot all.

There was an emblem from a dealer by that name for sale over at sYc earlier this year. See the 5th picture on page 1 of this thread http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/610764/1
No doubt there were many dealers with that name across the country, and this one doesn't have a town/city on it...... but do the mounting hole positions look to match the holes in your car? If so, the seller of those emblems may still have that one and could check the distance between holes.

Guarantee you it was an emblem. I think I remember it on the car in the late '80's when I drove it.

Capitol was a fixture in Nashville forever. I bought several cars from them over the years, and it was my first parts source as a Chevrolet dealer dating back to 1970. They were competition to the dealer that my X77 was sold through (Jim Reed), who became my GM parts source right up to the time they lost their GM dealer status during the cutback.

Capitol sold out to Carl Black several years back, moved literally across US41 to the old Nacarato GMC dealership. Junkyards are still full of Capitol emblems around Middle TN -

Steve
