Title: Best Repro Gas Tank..
Post by: dutch on September 01, 2015, 03:34:58 AM
Opinions on where to get a new gas tank that most closely resembles an original one for a '68.
I coated mine inside with an Eastwood kit probably 12 to 15 years back and I'm not sure if the coating has started to give up - but for the trouble of redoing it (if in fact that is possible) if that is what it ends up needing, I figure I would just replace it if there are good reproductions readily available in Canada..
Thought I saw a discussion or two regarding Spectra tanks being one of the best repro ones, years back - is that the case still or are there better, more accurate brands now available?
Thanks for any input - Randy

OER and Spectra still come up as the two top replacement tanks in recent threads over at TC. I used a OER stainless tank two years ago to avoid having to do it again in my lifetime.

Thanks for the replies gents - I asked and found I can get a Spectra tank fairly cheaply at work (around $125 before taxes) and from what I recall most considered that brand one, if not the best, reproductions a few years back..
Sounds like maybe that hasn't changed much - do they have an outside zinc coating appearance that closely mimics an original GM tank from "back in the day"?
After coating the interior of mine years ago I also painted the outside with an Eastwood zinc paint which was supposed to give it an OEM look - but I imagine any new Spectra tank should appear much more original than what I presently have now!?

Great - thanks for the pictures.. the tank finish looks very nice!
Would it make sense to coat the inside of a new one with Eastwood's tank liner or would that be considered overkill in your estimation?
Was the fit good as some have commented that the filler neck sits at the wrong angle of length (maybe the commenters on other posts were trying to fit a '69 into a '67 or '68 in error)?
Thanks - Randy
