68 SS 350... Bellhousing is natural finish with orange overspray, correct? Any pics of a survivor?

Overspray amount will vary depending on who was working. Generally a few inches in most cases.

Don't forget to paint the dust cover.

Great question. It was serviced by GMPD in black. At the engine plant it was received raw and painted orange with the engine.

Now that is new information to me... I can't recall ever removing one with remnants of orange paint... always black. Does this mean I've only ever removed service parts? OR was that due to the fact that when people did clutch replacements, they generally 'cleaned/repainted them black'?? (I'm probably thinking mostly of '55-60 Chevrolets, which are the cars I first worked on)... I can't recall what my '69 Z28 cover was painted, but I'm betting due to my history, that if I repainted it.... I did it in black!)..

I will look tonight at the 68 but last time I was under it the cover was painted (not great due to being installed) orange but I cant remember if it was bare or black. William is more than likely correct. Not that I am doubting.. ;)

We pulled a 63 327 from an impala a while back that appeared untouched. I remember putting it in the parts washer and under the grease it was orange.

All of the originals from the 60s that I have seen were painted orange.

Never have noted any black on a survivor!
But as William noted service parts (you can still purchase them from GM) are black. They are not technically the same as originals but are still available.

In judging how many points would be taken off for a all painted orange bell housing? Any body have picture of a original painted bell housing?

Study the picture of the motors on the rack in reply #16 and even though this is a b&w photo you can see the varying over spray.
How much was dependent on the sprayer and I can't see how points can be deducted based on the amount of over spray unless obvious signs such as
clean bell housing bolts when in fact those should have over spray (assuming a manual transmission and not an automatic).

The answer is "coverage varied - depending on the plant, the day and the painter".

That's Tonawanda and only one "snapshot" of that plant from that time of day on that day.
I wondered if bergy has an input on this. I may send him a pm.
