Title: 69Z orig goodyear tires
Post by: enio45 on November 11, 2006, 05:05:11 PM
I'm going to look at a set of orig 69Z goodyear tires - are to be new takeoffs from 1969.  To be certain - can anyone pls advise what to look for.  I can also use help on the production information that is also molded into the tires.  I believe they were all Nylon?

Looking for advise to be sure......

Yup; E70 x 15 Wide Tread GT with "NYLON" molded into the side wall.

I believe repros are "POLYESTER"

Thanks - is there somewhere on the web that shows the decoding of the production numbers that are molded into the tire?

The DOT number was required starting in 1969 or so, but there was no fully-standardized format until 1971; the last three numbers are the production date - the first two are the week of the year, and the last is the year. In any event, if they're 1969 tires, you certainly don't want to drive on them.

That doesn't conform to the DOT standardized format, so there's no way of knowing; manufacturers were free to have their own proprietary format prior to 1971, and I don't have those early codes.
