Title: Delco Energizer Y-55 Battery
Post by: dannystarr on March 31, 2015, 11:14:43 PM
Scored a correct reverse + -  Y-55 Delco Energizer Battery  ;D  It has never been charged, empty NOS. Spent a good hour getting it all cleaned up. Probably paid to much for it but I'll pay that CC later. Talking with Chick, I think I may heat up the label and remove it. I have not decided yet. He is under the impression that there was NO label on the assembly line batteries, and I think he is correct. And maybe even the yellow was not there either. Although I don't think we know that for sure yet. The battery is showing 1972 as it's first year to be punched on the tag. So I am assuming this is a late '71, very early '72. I may leave the tag, cause that just shows that it is an over the counter purchase. That matches my 55,000 original mile car. My car is not being restored, so it would probably have a label, Right?  Just like if the owner of the car went down and got a battery 4 or 5 years after buying the car. I need to learn how I am going to get the little wax stuff out, and what to put in it, and get it charged. I have already been offered 2K from a couple local Camaro friends. So who knows, that buys a lot of goodies!.. Danny

Wondering if this number on the bottom relates to a Z/28? Or is it VERY coincidental that there is a "Z" in the number. Also looks like a "1" on top of the zero? Double stamp?. Should it be 2100 ?  Danny

Also has some other numbers in the top...  F31  21   Date codes ? Reference numbers ? Danny

Thanx Steve,
Might just be a little TOO far gone in condition. I think a couple might have been red originally. I guess I could lightly paint them. Better than not having ANY.. D

Danny,

Nice score on the battery. I would leave the label and not worry about assembly line correct. The caps in the auction look good and can be detailed to look correct; priced right too.

Danny, I would probably leave the battery dry, and just swap it in for shows. It would outlast me.

Danny.....I have bought a set of these for a Y55 battery that I have.........
     http://www.classicindustries.com/product/nova/parts/by12007caps.html (http://www.classicindustries.com/product/nova/parts/by12007caps.html)

There is a couple of problems with this solution though....
     1.  The caps are painted red for the R59 battery but you can find some yellow paint and repaint them.
     2.  They are specifically made for the fake R59 topper so they cut most of the Delco Eye probe off so that it will fit in the shallow hole of the topper.

As Tom stated......I personally wouldn't activate the Y55 battery.   I would just use it as a show battery and replace it with your regular battery when you are ready to start or drive the car.

Danny, in our build thread I purchased a NOS yellow Delco eye and then we matched that paint to paint the caps that came with our Y55 in the early 80's as they were red.
Could send you a close up picture to at least come close on the color if you decide to paint some caps.

I am wondering how I would do the swap at big shows, like MCACN ?? Maybe I have it figured out...
Gotta have the charged battery in to get it loaded in the truck and shipped. Then once it is in place in the hall, I guess I could have the Y55 in the trunk ready to swap. But then what do I do with the charged battery? Maybe take it out the parts swap door, and put it in the trunk of my rental car? Then bring it back in Sunday night? How does it work, cause I read you can't start any engines in the hall, no matter what.. D

Just put it on the floor with the rest of your stuff. I had my car cover bag, cleaning/ detail supplies, two chairs and had plenty of room for a battery if needed. Don't sweat it, it's easy.

I say use the battery. If it dies, have it rebuilt.

Yup, use it. If it ever dies, gut it and install a battery inside the case.

That's what I was thinking.. A trick that you probably all know already, that was taught to Chick, then he recently taught me...Carefully cut the bottom of the battery off, deal with the mess, clean out the case, pull the battery posts out and presto install a Mazda Miata battery in the case. Shim it up tight if need be, nice and clean and seal it up. Pretty cool idea by somebody years ago I'm sure.
Anyway, I have to think about it and see what to do, but I am leaning towards firing it up, we'll see.. D

Similar to what the PS and FS and FAST guys do, been doing that for alot of years (to save weight), if you follow that sort of thing.

That battery will last maybe 3-4 years, it will sit idle most of the time. Please don't kill it. JMHO....gutted it's worthless.

I get it Steve, but I think if I do it I will go all the way. And then at that point I will not be worried about gutting it some day down the road, cause I am not going to sell it. You are right it will spend a lot of time on the trickle charger, as I have only put 2,300 miles on the car in just a year. But I think that will probably increase substantially for the next year. I don't know, maybe we will open a new topic and have everyone vote on it for a month. Then maybe that will help sway me. I may take the 2K I was offered and run!  ;D ;) .. D

Original battery  = $2K  ?
battery topper    = $50  ?

Decisions?  Impossible!!  :)

Makes sense to me.. :)

If you don't have a set of pantone chips.
The best way to color match over a computer is to get a PREMIUM name brand product that has the color you are trying to illustrate in the BRAND NAME LOGO...  this enables someone in another location to go pick up the product and match from the logo.
Logo's are typically printed in SPOT colors ie Pantone premixed.

Printing is most often built color, spot color, or combo of the two.

BUILT COLORS are typically 4 color process CMYK  (cyan- magenta -yellow-black) when looking at built colors there are differing dot colors inside the image to "build" the correct color.

SPOT COLORS are solid colors in percentages up to 100% typically called Screens in various percentages -

Solid spot colors enable the most accurate match.

Premium Consumer product companies are VERY ANAL about their colors and they will not vary by much if at all.

Danny, yep you pull the guts but not the posts. Valuable piece you have so we understand the tough decision and why your going to receive many yea's and nays on using. I learned about gutting and placement of anther battery from a C2 NCRS judge friend. That NCRS gang know their stuff on a lot of stuff.  ;D

Aint that the truth. Commonwealth Bank yellow is a single point on the HSL curve. And the most anal of all are the wine label crowd!! Just of the rails!! [I service the print industry]
