Hello, I am new to this forum. First off, sorry for my user name having that other four letter word in it. I am a Ford guy and I have this name on other Ford related forums, so it is easier to keep them all the same for me.
I have my Great Grandmother's 1969 Camaro. It is a 6 cylinder with a Turbo 350. My Great Grandmother bought it new in 1969. She traded in her 1963 Nova and cash for the car. She drove it as a daily driver until she passed away in the late 70's she gave it to my Grandmother. She then drove it as a daily driver until she passed in 1996. She then gave it to my mother. Until last year the car had sat since 1996. I have given it a tune up, new master cylinder, new belts, new plugs, new rotor, new cap, new wires, new starter, new battery and installed the ralley wheels.
I am a Ford guy at heart, but this car has too much sentimental value to let go. I took it out for a little exercise last week. It drives great and is a lot of fun. The engine has never been apart. The odometer just turned over 50,000, but I think it is probably 150 or 250? (not sure). It is well used and worn, but actually not too bad of a car. It has many parking lot war wounds and is not a perfect car by any means. The paint and stripes are original but faded. The interior is original...my grandmother would pay me $5 a week to ride my bike to her house and detail it for her back in 1994 and 1995.
I hope you enjoy these pictures. Hopefully in the future I will have a chance to work on it more. Right now it is a good driver. I would like to put disc brakes on the front at some point, but the rest of the car will stay original. I am excited to get involved in this forum and learn many new facts about Camaros. Thank you Paul! I have acutally been driving it a lot lately. Our winter has been very mild and full of sunshine, so I have had plenty of opportunities to get it out. It is fun because of how I remember riding around with my Grandma when I was a little kid. It takes me back in time.
I have been reading other posts on this forum and this looks to be a great place to be. So much good information to read and learn. :)

Seriously, welcome to the site! That is a great story and the car is definately a "keeper"! Do as you wish, but I would encourage you to leave it as-is and keep it maintained. Learn to live with the scars and dings. At a car show, it will probably get more looks than a restored one. There are a lot of detail pics you could take to document things for others restoring their car too. It is only original once, they say. Now, I have a similar story except my passion is the Camaro and I married into a Ford family. I inherited my inlaws survivor, always garaged, '66 Mustang convertible and my wife's Grandpa's 68 F100 short bed (restored). They are taking up valuable garage space that a Chevy could use, but that's the way it goes.

DX1 stripe.. Nice, you dont see them very often. I always said I should have put it back on my old 69. I would stick the steelies and hubcaps back on with fresh white line tires.. Dare to be different! Sweet car.

I am about restoring this car rather than hot rodding it. From what you guys have said and what I have read in other posts, I think this is the place for me. I will post more about the car as time goes on, because I know I am going to have a ton of questions.

Looks like the hood portion of your stripes is missing. Search the site for "dx1" for other pictures of the stripe package. Nice car, welcome to the site!

Instead of "restoring it" I think the thing to do with this car is to preserve it in its current condition. While I also like rally wheels, I would agree with Darrell to run the original steel rims with new white walls and the hub caps. At that point your car would probably be in the 1% range. I have never seen another driver with those hub caps, cool.
Just keep it clean and keep everything operational, and the car will take good car of you. They are only original once....

I agree with a couple of guys above regarding the hub caps and condition, remember that a car is only original once! ;)
A new set of ww tires and the original hub caps and you really have a head turner as it is!
I also notice that the hood stripe, decal, is missing but I have another quest regarding the DX-1....didn't the six bangers have the cui emblem on the front fender and therefore it should be a gap fore it on the stripe as it is on say a 350 car?
I really love the DX-1 and intend to put it on my X44 some day..... ::)

Thank you BULLITT65. The original hubcaps for the car are badly dented. I think my grandma used to park by brail. They are very bad. I need to find some better ones or NOS ones. I still have the original wheels and caps in the garage. The rally wheels are a cheap easy bolt on and I can change them out at any time.
When I say I want to restore the car I guess I say that loosely. I understand the importance of keeping it original and keeping the factory marks and conditions. I agree, it is important to preserve the car and that is what I want to do. At the same time, the car doesn't operate like a brand new low mileage car. It is well used and worn. I plan to clean all of the grime and grease first before tearing into it too far. It is currently a good driver and it will stay together as a good driver for a long time. Over the weekend I will try to take some more pictures and share them with everyone.

Thank you Tom. The stripe is still there on the hood, but is very faint. Over the years it has "burned" off. The angle of my pictures above don't show it, but it is there.
Thank you again for the nice comments. This is a relief. Almost everywhere I go with the car people ask if it has a V8 and I say no, then they always say you should do this or that to the car. I am more partial to original cars than customs in most cases and in this case the car will stay original. It is very nice to hear from you guys and your responses. Thank you. Yes, I do wish it was a 396 or 427 like everyone else, but I am not that lucky so it is going to stay the stock 230 6 and I am alright with that.

I think you are on the right track already. For the Hub caps, I would evaluate the set you have, and find some really nice used ones. No need to spend big money on NOS, some light patina will fit in well with your car.
One thing I forgot to mention, (but you may already know), if you remove any parts off the car, don't throw them away just put them on the shelf. Even the original dented hubcaps, hang them on the wall. To many guys have thrown stuff away, only to realize later that they wish they should have held onto all the stuff they removed.

Notice the stickers on the front and rear bumpers? Those are from when my Great Grandma worked at Ford Ord in California. Those stickers allowed her in and out of the facility. I would like to find some original stickers or try to reproduce the stickers if at all possible.

A good body guy could fix that fender by popping it out. Wouldn't be perfect, but wouldn't need paint. And would be low cost...

I would imagine the same could be said for the wheel covers. It probably would not take much to hammer out the dents and straighten them out.
On the fender, I would just do it yourself with a rubber mallet and a body hammer and even an amatuer, like myself, could get a good bit of the dent out without repaint.
Also noticed this car is a non X11(X44). Would be nice to get some detail pics of untouched areas as so many restos add X11 components.
If you do decide to hammer out the fender and the grille is still good, not cracked, remove it before hammering or you may possibly damage it. If uncracked, the grille is a valuable piece.

BULLITT65 - my car does not have that blue sticker. What does that mean? There is a place that looks like old glue residue, but I don't know if that is from an oil change sticker or something else.

So there are 2 raised ribs on the door, (for sticker placement) and starting with cars delivered in September of 69 it was mandatory for them to have this door sticker with the VIN. Thats is it in a nutshell.
Your car (08A) car was most likely delivered around the second to third week of August, so most likely it never had the sticker.

Hakan, I believe the 250 six cylinder got the engine size fender emblems, nothing for the 230.

ko-lek-tor - Thank you for the comments. Yes, I agree with you and KurtS about popping out the fender dent. It is on the list to do. Would it be best to take the fender completly off? I have a friend that is an amazing body man and he doesn't belive in any filler, so I will talk to him when it comes time.
Let me know which pictures of the X11 areas you want me to take? I am going to be gone for a couple of days on a business trip, but I can take photos when I get back.

hgger69 - I will take some pictures of the hood this weekend. The stripes are there on the hood, but have worn off over time. My picture angle wasn't good to see them.

wow, nice car. fun fact?, my ex-wife put that exact same dent in the driver's side front fender of my "blue car". Boy was I mad. LOL.

Wow! I bet that was not a fun day.
The story about this dent is from my Grandma always parking the car on the street in front of her house. My Dad would always tell my Grandma to park it in the driveway but for some reason she didn't like to. One day this dent magically appeared. Someone hit it and never said anything. I think it happened in 1994 or 95.

I took some pictures yesterday in the shop. I am sorry about the pour lighting. It was raining hard yesterday and I didn't want to put the car outside. I tried to ad some more light, but I think it added more shadows. I have some photos below, but have many more at my photobucket site.
I don't have a smog pump on this car. My dad remembers it never having a smog pump. My great-grandmother bought the car new in California. She lived in California until 1976 when she moved to Redmond Oregon. By this time my dad was 19 years old and was into cars. He doesn't remember it ever having a smog pump when it came to Redmond and he doesn't think there would be any reason for anyone to take it off if there was one. I can't see any evidence of where it would be installed or any plugs in the head. I realize that California has stricter laws about smog starting in 1968. 428 Cobra Jets all had smog because of these laws. Did they have a law that was only required on so many cubic inches??

I did replace the carpet last summer. That is not original. The rest of the interior is original.

I don't know if it is the original water pump or not. I doubt it, but not sure. Here are some close up photos. I need to remove the water pump pulley to see the pump. If it fails in the future or if something else goes wrong I will tear into it, but I am going to keep it running for right now. I can try to get better pictures if you want. Thank you, Brian

My understanding is that auto trans versions of L6 and small block V8 cars did not employ a smog system... so if this is true, andthis car has an auto, then it should never have had a smog setup.... Is that true or ??

From the CRG 1967-69 Camaro Emission Systems report...
"In 1968 and 1969, the California and federal emissions requirements were the same and all cars were built to the same 50-state standard. The AIR system was installed on all L6 cars with manual transmissions, all small blocks with manual transmissions, and all Camaros with big blocks. (Chevelles and full-size cars with the 396/325hp engine and TH400 transmission were the only 68-69 Chevrolet big block cars that did not have smog pumps.) Only the automatic L6 and automatic small block Camaros did not have smog pumps, instead they had the simpler Controlled Combustion System. Generally speaking, an automatic car required less aggressive emission control than a manual transmission car because the engine load (and carburetor fuel metering consistency) was more stable and predictable."

My mistake. I thought I read somewhere that by 1969 all California destined Camaros were equipped with the A.I.R. system. I see by your air cleaner snorkel that your car is equipped with the Controlled Combustion System (CCS) which was used on the automatic L6's and small blocks. Thanks for the great pics.

Interesting looking at the pics of your doors. Not only do you not have the vin sticker, it doesn't look like you have the raised ribs on the door, for the sticker placement. Maybe its the pics? can you feel any raised lines in the metal where your oil change sticker is?
