Title: Stuck piston in NOS wheel cylinder
Post by: stovebolt on February 20, 2015, 10:52:56 PM
I have a NOS front wheel cylinder with one of the pistons stuck. Any ideas how I can unstick it without taking the cylinder apart or causing any damage? Thanks.

have you tried a 'liquid wrench' type product?  ..  and maybe a little air pressure? *G*..  be careful where you point that thing if you use too much air pressure.. :)

I agree with the liquid wrench type products and in particular Kano - Kroil which is an industrial quality product that you can order on line.  Bathe it and let it soak for a few days if necessary.

Good luck.

If it's sticking you are going to have to rebuild it.  If one is sticking I would do all of them.

No need to use air on that type cylinder since you can just push it on through. Take off the boots, spray it down with penetrant and use a deep well socket putting cylinder in vice long ways (ends of cylinder facing jaws). I have lead covers for jaws to keep from nicking up cylinder. Should break loose with little pressure. If it doesn't , get out the fire wrench or propane torch and warm it up a little. Don't need to get it smoking hot, you do not want rubber cups to melt or spring to lose tension. Once loose, let cool and push it on through. Probably will not even need heat from my experience.

I used the vice to push the piston inward and air pressure to push it outward and got it moving. Thanks for the suggestions. Joe.
