Title: Console Screw - 9421137
Post by: Camarocards on February 03, 2015, 01:26:37 AM
Does anyone know what the correct head configuration is for screw number 9421137 (AIM UPC D55 A2)? All of these screws in my console are hex. The replacements I just received from AMK (p/n B-11144) are Phillips head.

Thanks,

Bob

Phillips on Rt. is correct. Other one looks like #14 - 3420666. of course, they may have used whatever they had when building your console and all miy consoles are 69's

My 1968 has phillips in the easily seen locations.

#14 are the hex head screws

#14,is indeed a hex head screw ( screw on left). It is a #8 x 5/8.

#2 is also a #8 screw. It is 1/2" long. The one in the middle pic is what I've removed from all of the locations highlighted in the AIM.

Just wondering if AMK got it wrong or perhaps 69's used the Phillips head and '68's used hex??? Or perhaps, as suggested, the factory used whatever was on hand?

I've worked on many consoles. All had phillips for #2. IIRC, Home Depot had an exact replacement.

Thanks Kurt. For whatever reason, they must have been changed by a PO.

Are you sure that is an original console?  If not factory original, then it might be a reproduction.

Jerry,

Definitely original but I'm afraid I'll be going the repro route since the back two tabs that hold the ashtray lid are broken. :( I've owned this car for 37 years and the console has never been out but who knows if a PO messed with it. I don't think they were making repro's 37 years ago. :)

Bob....Only other explanation I can imagine is that the correct hardware supply was depleted and they had to substitute.  Strange things did happen to keep the system running.

Yes.....the plastic parts do tend to deteriorate and break over time.  Always hate to use the reproduction parts but sometimes the repair of the original is impossible and you have to bite the bullet.

Jerry,
Yes. That could very well be the case. So now the question becomes, do I use what "I think" is original to the car or go with the concensus that Phillips head screws were used?

Agree 150%! :) All is not lost yet though. I've had at least one forum member assist me in trying to obtain just the bottom half of the console. It would be great if I could keep it all OEM.

Paul,

Hmmmm. Guess it's a possibility. Not sure about the "frocking" though! :)

Maybe I'll ask him to send some pics of the rear ashtray area as this seems to be the area that is most commonly broken.

Thanks!
