Title: 69 rear brake drum & front rotor P/N's and date codes
Post by: Dave69x33 on October 27, 2006, 01:50:35 AM
The brake drums on my 69Z have the following P/N - 3841177 stamped in the outer rim face along with what I believe is a date code, "W-12X" and "W-14X".  See attached pictures. I am note sure if they are original to my car.  The Camaro had just over 45K miles on it when I purchased it and it still had the (original?) 2-pc front rotors.

The front rotors are casting P/N "880" with "16 U l" and "16 U l l" cast into back side of the inner hub area.

While we are on the topic of brakes the front calipers are Delco Moraine units with the following cast markings:  The LH side: “510”,  “L” for left, what appears to be a “7”, and Julian date code “254”.  The RH side: “577”, “R” for right, a “9”, and Julian date code “274”.  Both have a 12 dot casting time clock, and “slotted” center screw pointer.   The LH cast at the 8th dot CW from the double dot (8th hour?).  The RH cast at the 9th dot (9th hour?).

Can anyone confirm the part numbers, date code and/or cast markings?

My front rotors had yellow paint stenciled numbers on them with a julian date. I found this when I went to sandblast them. I have seen the yellow numbers on other rotors I blasted also. My brake drums have the same p/n casting and W-14X like yours.

Dave & Mike -

I just checked the rear brake drums on my '68 Z/28.  I don't know if they are original, but here are the numbers on them:

right side:  3841177   W-11X
left side:    3841177   W-1X

I can't confirm the numbers on the front rotors w/o pulling them off, but there is a "ll" cast on the outside of the right front rotor only.  I won't confuse the issue with my caliper numbers as '68 as the four piston units.  Hope this helps.

My post above was in reference to my 69 RS/SS. I havent looked at my 67 z/28, but I am pretty sure they have not been off the car. Only 19,000 miles on it.

Jonesy,

Your 67 Z sounds like a neat car!  Have you had it long?  Does it still have its numbers matching engine and trans?  I would like to see pictures some time.

I have had it for 2 years. It has the original trans and rear. I am still working on getting my original block for this car.
It is out in Oak Harbor WA in a machine shop. Hopefully I will get it someday. I cant get anyone to cooperate so far.
I have the heads, intake, exhaust manifolds, smog and carb. Its been off the roads since about 1976 or so. 4.88 factory rear.
Probably not the most streetable car. Nantucket Blue, Black Vinyl, Rally Sport, Headrest seats, Shoulder belts, Deluxe belts, Console, guages, wood wheel.

Can anybody give a quick lesson on how to read these Brake Drum date codes?  ie; W-12X , W-14X , W-1X
