Title: New "Muscle Car" digital magazine available
Post by: Jon Mello on December 06, 2014, 06:18:36 AM
Steve Holmes, who has posted here numerous times and who runs the excellent Roaring Season website (http://www.theroaringseason.com/forumdisplay.php?2-General-Discussion), has introduced his new Muscle Car digital magazine as of December 4th. It is 100% on-line, not published in a hard copy. There are some very well done features in this issue, but perhaps most interesting to us would be the feature story on the '68 Penske Camaro currently owned by Tom McIntyre. Issue 1 is free to download, and is available here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.musclecardigitalmagazine.mcdmissue1

Excellent job as always, Steve.  I'm not sure how you find the time to do it all.

Steve says... "If your system uses another platform, we’re hoping to have Apple iTunes, Zinio etc available shortly. We’ve been slightly frustrated by a new block Youtube appears to be setting up that doesn’t allow their videos to be played anywhere outside their own website, so the video links take you through to Youtube, rather than play in the mag itself, but we’re looking into a program that will allow us to imbed them within the mag."

What if you have a Windows operated computer?

Thanks for the link Jon, and also the hard work from Steve!

Thanks so much Jon for letting people know about the new mag. I really appreciate you helping get the word out.

Just so you guys know, I was grateful to be able to tap into Jon's amazing knowledge-base on first gen Camaro race cars when putting together the Penske Camaro story, and Jon also gave permission to use some of the photos from this incredible resource he has put together.

Anyway, about the mag, Muscle Car Digital Magazine is a new magazine that focuses on the history of the muscle car. Its 100% digital, and won't be reproduced in paper form. The reason for this is because its built around including video and audio (as well as text and photos) in the articles, to help portray the stories. Also, the magazine layout is quite different to a traditional paper based magazine, which in digital form, is a bit clumsy and time consuming to navigate.

The mag has initially been designed predominantly for use on tablets, as these are an incredibly fast growing area of the market, with almsot 200 million being sold in 2013, whereas desktop personal computer sales are in decline. However, we're working through the process of also using a different build program so the mag can also be viewed on laptop and desktop computers. I personally use a desktop pc for almost all my work, and I think many others do the same.

We've just released Issue 1 for Android operating systems, such as Samsung Galaxys etc. We're hoping to have the Apple version available shortly also. We have to submit the magazine to the different operating system companies separately and they each review it before giving permission to host it (or not). Each submission is really time consuming, but fortunately only has to be done once.

Anyway, Issue 1 of the magazine features the Penske Camaro raced by Mark Donohue from Round 3 onwards in the 1968 Trans-Am. Once again, my thanks to Jon for his help with this, and also the cars owner Tom McIntyre. The article covers the history of this car, and is about 6,500 words long. We also feature a two owner Australian Valiant Charger R/T E38 that was a race car from new in 1971 and for the first two years of its life, before being sold to the family who still own it. We also have a 1 of 1 optioned Mustang 428 Cobra Jet in New Zealand, a cool collection of AMC motor racing memorabilia, plus event coverage, general muscle car stories etc. There is also a section called Looking Back, in which we ask people to submit their old muscle car images from the 1960s, 70s and 80s. Jon has also supplied some neat images of himself and some buddies taking their '69 Camaros for a blast around some Californian roads in 1979.

So thats it in a nutshell. I'll keep you posted on development regarding the other platforms (such as the iPad version) as they come to light, and also progress on doing a version for desktop/laptop.

Thanks again to Jon.

Hi everyone, I'm very pleased to finally announce the Apple version for Muscle Car Digital Magazine is now finally available, for users of Apple iPads and iPhones. There were lengthy delays due to us wanting to give Issue 1 away for free download, whereas Apple are set up to charge for downloads. We got there in the end though.

We are close to also having a version of the mag available for desktop and laptop computers.

The Apple version of Issue 1 is Free, and available for download here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/muscle-car-digital/id958945371?mt=8

Steve, great stuff, am looking forward to the version for Apple lap tops. In the shot of Mark's pit stop above, is that '68 Meadowdale raceway ? I think they only had one Trans-Am race. where is Roger ? he's usually monitoring things !

Thanks, much appreciated. Yes that shot is from Meadowdale, as is the one used on the front cover. They are both by Pete Luongo.

Is that Roger down near the front fender signalling to Mark?

That looks to be a very familiar Warren Agor on the fuel fill (white shirt, trackside)

It has always fascinated me to see high profile race cars later in their careers as they've worked their way down the line through various owners. Consider the 1968 Trans-Am season, the cars that came together to compete for that season, and how they then dispersed in the years that followe.

Tom McIntyre sent me this pic of Bruce Belcher, who was one of the later owners of the Penske Camaro we featured in Issue 1, which Tom has owned since the 1980s. I'm guessing this pic was taken sometime during the late 1970s. Its interesting to see how little has changed on this car. This is virtually as Tom bought it a few years later. Many Trans-Am and A/Sedan cars were cut up during the 1970s as sedan rules became quite far removed from those through to 1972. But somehow this car remained unscathed.

When Bruce owned the Camaro, it was almost locked into a time-warp from when Penske bought it back off Sam Posey in 1969, updated it to '69 Penske Camaro specs with the yellow Minilites etc, and kept it as their back-up car should any of the factory Ford teams try to eliminate Donohue.

Thanks Tom for the photo.

Thanks for posting that great photo, Steve.  It really is amazing how well-cared-for this car was after its Penske heyday. So many of these cars got cut up, abused, and left to die, but not this one thankfully.
Title: Re: New "Muscle Car" digital magazine available
Post by: Steve Holmes on April 23, 2015, 12:53:18 AM
Thanks guys, glad you enjoyed that. These sorts of photos always interest me. There is a period that old race cars go through, whereby they're no longer competitive as front-line race cars, yet they're also not old enough to have gained historic significance. As a result, they don't have a lot of value.

This is the period where they're at their most vulnerable. Some are cut up and modified beyond recognition to stay competitive, some are pushed out into the elements, to sit in a field and battle the elements, while some are scrapped altogether. But some manage to survive, relatively unscathed, either through being parked up and stored somewhere until they appreciate, or through being fortunate enough to have a series of owners who, for whatever reason, retain them at the level they were originally built. Thats the case with this car. It changed hands approx every two years from 1968 through to when Tom McIntyre bought it in the 1980s, and somehow survived that period in amazing original condition.

Tom sent me several images to go with the article on his Penske Camaro, some of which I didn't include for various reasons, such as, the quality was not good, or the photographer wasn't known. One such was this cool pic of the Camaro on the back of the Penske transporter which I wanted to share with you guys. You might know who the photographer is Jon if you've seen this one before?

Sweet pic. I love how low to the ground the car is, and you can make out the big tires profile out back.

I guess gas really was cheap in the 60's, it looks like a few gallons from the car, and then a few extra from the hose.... :D

Steve, thanks for posting that photo. That is actually from the Continental Divide Trans-Am race (http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=10304.135) in August '68 rather than at War Bonnet. That steep sloping hill along the main straight is a dead giveaway for that track.

No problem, Steve. Honest mistake by somebody, possibly by Pete Luongo himself.

I want the RAMP TRUCK!!!

You know what, I'm surprised a 1-ton truck can handle the weight! Those trucks only have a GVWR of I think 10,000lbs. The truck eights probably 5000,+ 2,000 for the betal bed, at leaste, and then ~3,500? for the car....that's really pushin it hard!

Those trucks must have been going about 30mph up a hill!

Sadly, neither of these images were in the article. As is sometimes the case when constructing a historical article, the photos you're hoping to find turn up after the article has been published!

This was the case here. I recently made contact with a very nice guy called Derek Sutton, whose father Bill was an SCCA Tech Inspector for the NE region. It was Bill who snapped these pics, plus many others of both Trans-Am and Can-Am races. Sadly, it looks like many of the images have been lost or thrown away, but Derek is in the process of scanning and sending me all the known surviving Trans-Am pics, which at this stage, appears to total around 30 pics.

They're just amateur pics obviously, but still hugely enjoyable to see.

Wow, those are really nice, Steve. Thanks to Derek for sharing them and to you for posting them here. It's fairly hard to find color photos from the '67 season.

That top photo really gives a good look at the cheater (extra tall) rear spoiler Donohue was using during the middle of the '67 season. I can't believe they let him get away with that.

Good point Jon. I don't think I have seen that profile shot before. Only the rear angle with the stripe running down the tail panel and rear valance. I think that helped disguise the height. There's no hiding it from the side.

Glad you like them Jon. Yes that cheater rear spoiler is quite obvious from this angle. And indeed you have to wonder how it is they got away with using it as long as they did. Its certainly not a subtle cheat.

Here is another pic, of Craig Fisher in his Camaro.

Steve, that's the first picture that I've seen from Bryar where it looks like Craig Fisher could actually be the driver of the #77 Golden Mile car. I've seen pics of Gordon Dewar behind the wheel at that race but never CF. Craig told me personally that he didn't remember driving at that race and believed he had joined the Penske team at that time. Since there was duct tape over the #77 roundel covering up the "Mr Quiet" moniker, I felt it was very likely that Dewar was the only driver of the car at that race.

Sorry for the slow reply Jon, I've been on the road the last week and a bit.

Thats an interesting piece of info re the Fisher Camaro. I hadn't realised there was a chance Fisher wasn't in the car. I just made the assumption this was him.

Some of the images supplied were obviously taken during practice, such as the Penske Camaro shot above. In the race itself it rained, although it doesn't appear to have got heavy until some time after the start. But an image I have of the start shows the track to be slightly damp. I thought perhaps that photo could have been taken during practice, as the track is very dry.

Here is one from the race.

Thanks Mike, I really appreciate that. Sitting in the drivers seat of the Ware family Camaro is young Rick Ware, Johnny Ware's son. Rick eventually raced this car once or twice in the 1980s before it was sold, and before he went on to establish Rick Ware Racing, running teams in NASCAR Sprint Cup, Xfinity series, Craftsman Truck, ARCA, plus AWA motocross etc. I guess racing was in the blood from an early age.

We've nearly completed Issue 2 of the magazine. Its been a tough road, with various challenges along the way. But we're nearly there, and expect to have each of the following issues available every 2 months, all going to plan.

One of the late additions to Issue 2 are a small number of photos kindly sent to me by Randy Hernandez, from his father Fran's collection. These are of the 1969 Kar-Kraft Mustang race car prototype. The photos are dated December 14, 1968. The car is just beautiful from every angle, and the detail and incredible panel fit is enjoyable to see. The droop nose is also really obvious to see from this angle.

Steve,

That's a gorgeous shot of that Kar-Kraft Mustang. Thanks for posting it.

I'm really looking forward to Issue 2. I know you have put a tremendous amount of work into it.

Thanks guys. Issue 2 features a couple of NASCAR stock cars, including a Dodge Charger which raced at Le Mans in 1976, and the only known surviving 1964 Galaxie Holman-Moody team car. Stock car racing is not a subject I have intimate knowledge of, so the research required to compile these stories was really intensive. It definitely slowed the process. But I'm happy to say my knowledge on the subject now is much improved as a result!

I love those old '60s Nascar racecars and look forward to the article on this one. I'm personally a big fan of racecars that are based off of production line vehicles.

Yeah, me too! Its interesting to see how quickly stock car racing progressed during this period. For 1963, Ford supplied complete turn-key Q Code 4V 427 cars, which Holman-Moody then converted into race cars. For 1964, Ford supplied the cars without engine or transmission. But for 1965, Ford supplied bodies in white, and it was when these arrived in late 1964 H-M began applying their own VIN tags, because the supplied cars didn't have tags.

As some of the 1964 cars were still at the workshops when this process began, H-M attached VIN numbers to these cars too, including this one, which had spent the latter half of 1964 in the USAC stock car series, run by Mike Terrafino whose team rebuilt the car following a shunt at Atlanta.

This car was built as a 'guest car' by H-M. At the beginning of 1964, they had two main drivers in 'Fireball' Roberts and Fred Lorenzen, and a car was built for these two. Then a further two or three cars were also built and run at selected events with guest drivers, including this car, who had Cobra driver Skip Hudson at the wheel at Riverside, Bobby Marshman at Daytona, and Augie Pabst here at Sebring, as pictured.

This wasn't actually a Grand National race, rather a 250 kilometer (thats how it was described in period) FIA sedan race, which was a support race to the Sebring 12 Hour. Most of the cars entered were Group 2 cars, including a pair of Lotus Cortinas for Jim Clark and Dan Gurney. Walt Hansgen was also entered in a Falcon Sprint.

There was a Le Mans-style start in which the drivers had to run across the track, jump in their cars, and start racing. Because the door was bolted shut on the Galaxie, Augie had to climb through the window, hence his slow getaway. You can see him right down towards the rear. His was the only Galaxie in the race. But that didn't matter, he was leading by lap 2 and still in front at the end.

Neat info on the car, Steve.  With the 427 combined with Sebring's long straights, I am not surprised the car was in the lead by lap 2.

Sorry guys, I don't mean to bombard you all with a pile of Ford stuff, so will keep it to a minimum, but thought you might enjoy these two images, sent to me by Randy Hernandez.

These photos, as well as several others, were taken by Randy when his father Fran brought home a Ford GT40 in 1967. Heading up Fords racing programs at the time, Fran was regularly bringing home cool 'company' cars, but on this occasion, all the neighborhood kids flocked to have their photos taken with the GT40.

Thats Fran in the glasses. His wife, Randy's mother, is next to him, while Randy's younger brother Rick is in the green Giants t-shirt. Everyone else are neighbors.

The three Mercury Comets are all part of the Hernandez house-hold too.

Neat photos, Steve. Thanks for posting.

Looks like Fran's neighbors were GM fans. Where did he live?

Steve, you wrote a heck of a lot more than I anticipated, give me a couple days a week and I'll get back to you.  ;D

Finished most of the article on the Ford Galaxie racer, man...a lot of drivers died back then. Really sad to know they had a lot of life left and they went so soon. Beautiful cars.

Thanks for the astounding amount of effort it must have taken. Very detailed work!

Guys, thanks so much for your kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed the mag. I'm not sure if and when there will be an Issue 3. Issue 2 sold quite poorly, and I can't help but wonder if the content needs to be presented in another format, such as a free to view site, or some other form. The jury is still out.

Maybe it is an advertising issue, meaning not enough people new about it.

Yes you may well be right. My concern is that there is so much on the internet for free, I fear people have an expectation that anything on the internet should be free of charge.

I though it was fairly priced, plus I did not have to go to some zoo like Wal Mart and deal with crazy people to get it like a magazine. It was the only online magazine I ever paid for actually.

You get what you pay for most of the time.

I am apprehensive about paying for anything online, but any doubts were quashed with the quality of work. The photos were awesome, and the stories unique.

Advertising is not cheap, and good advertising to a relevant demographic is just going to be more.

To be honest--not to say this would be affordable--but I think you would see the most success by selling hard copies at Monterrey Reunions(high traffic of relevant demographic), or any HTA event for that matter. But how much for quality printing? Would event planners want a cut of the profits? Who'd distribute?
Business is not easy when involving niche hobby's.
