Just a "what would you guys do" question.
I sold my '68 Z/28 a while back, the current engine in the car was 350 Vette engine(correct Vette suffix, not a Craigslist Vette engine :) ).
I asked the guy who bought it if he was interested in the original engine and he said NO :o I did ask for a nominal amount but I don't recall how much, and I did ask him if he would like to swap for the 350.
Now i have a block(std bore), crank, rods, pistons, heads and a balancer.
Would you guys hang on to them in anticipation that an owner/next owner may come looking for them one day.........or just move them on?
This is not a for sale ad so please don't ask :)

Wow.. did you know this guy at all? Do you have any mutual friends who might go and talk to him and provide him with a whack upside his head to try and get things functioning?
Did you get the impression that he felt he had paid far too much for the car originally or was resentful for some other reason to make him so illogical, like maybe he felt the engine should have been included in the sale.
He obviously doesn't have much of a grasp of just how many owners would love to have the same opportunity presented to them..
Depending on what 'nominal' pertains to - in your comment "I did ask for a nominal amount" - its certainly hard to imagine his train of thought or lack thereof.
I would suggest if you still have any contact with him, try and get back and give him one last chance to readjust his logic.
If that doesn't work get whatever you can for what you have, but try and retain some idea of where the parts might end up so you could pass along such valuable info in the future if it becomes necessary to someone who cares..

Complete engine intake to pan ? Why did you do the swap ? Mechanical issues?

Sometimes we change our minds, given time to re-think the situation and getting more information. The new owner may have a change of heart and may want it now, so I would give him one last chance. I know several Camaro owners that just do not care about "correctness" or putting their car back to original. Hard for us, here on CRG, to understand, I know.

I'd contact him again and express your going to sell the engine and kindly ask if he realizes it puts his car up 25 to 30% in value. I had a DZ short-block in our 67 corvette (was in the car when we purchased it in 1983) and found the owner of the 69Z in 2008 after it had been out of the 69Z since 1981. Took the guy 4 months to decide and what broke the ice was when I wanted to buy the car from him.

The guy didn't pay a great deal for the car(he paid a lot less than i did).
I have tried to dig out paperwork with his details...to no avail :(

I'd sell it, and ask the buyer that if he should in turn sell it in the future, to keep track of the new buyer's details, and so on for subsequent buyers. Some day, an owner of the car will want to reunite them, and the trail may not have gone too cold.
You might have more luck finding a buyer for an MO block if it was back in the US though.

Put it in another car and hang onto it. Someone will be looking for it someday and you might be the link that reunites them.

Tough call If it was "ME" & I needed the cash, I would sell it & move on.
I am one of those 68 Guys and realize how important (The born with motor) is to the 68Z -vs- a missing original lump. So as a hobbyist I would want to see it reunited (Cue the music) for the car to be "More" legit & enjoyable.
Otherwise just hold on to it, List it with the orphans and keep your feelers out and "orphan-list it" for a call in the future.
Some owners really care more about some repop emblems on a clone than the chance at acquiring a integral piece of automotive history.
