Title: Help me with this cowl tag
Post by: Fernando on October 08, 2014, 04:02:55 AM
I found this 69 camaro I've got the VIN and this cowl tag, I don't know if it's a real Z28 1969, the engine block code matches, the transmission matches, but the cowl tag has this X11 Norwood code... Please help me, I'm a little far away!

Fernando, the X11 tag is not a 69 Z/28 X coded tag. All 69 Norwood Z/28's were either X33 or X77 once they started putting the X codes on the trim tag. You say the engine block and transmission match. What do they match? The VIN?  Do you have pictures of the stampings on both the engine and transmission and of the car? What makes you think this car is a Z/28? Please give us more info and pictures to go on.

Thanks you very much, the car is very rusted, I put another pictures, I was reading in this page about the engine code... and the transmission code, so I think is a 302 and the transmission is a Muncie... but I'm not shure. The car also had this Hurst shifter, and some very old Z28 logo. What do you think about?

The vin is too early for an 010 block. Very easy to add a z/28 emblem.

incorrect shifter handle. The only bonus would be if the block is an original 302. It may have an orphan block that somebody on here is looking for....

From ChevyMania.com

Code  Year  CID   Vehicle   HP    RPO   Trans      Carb    Comments
TYX    75     350   Truck     160   LS-9   Manual   4-Brl    C 10 & C 20
TYX    76     350   Truck     165   LS-9   Manual   4-Brl    C 10 & C 20
TYX    77     350   Truck     165   LS-9   Manual   4-Brl    C 10 & C 20

The block casting date would tell you which year.

Thanks you Paul!. What do you think about the transmission? Has it some value? Is it a real Muncie?

You're welcome.  The casting number (3925660) in your photo is that of a Muncie.  If you post the partial VIN and transmission assembly code that is stamped on the transmission case, we can tell you if the transmission is original or not.

Thats a 68 Muncie assembly date so its not original to the car.  At best it was originally a small block RS/SS, but it could also have been an L14 307 or L65 350 equipped Camaro with style trim (chrome molding package essentally) or RS package.  Its not now and never was a Z28.

Yup, that's a 1968 Muncie 4-speed that was assembled on December 14, 1967.  If there is a partial VIN stamped on the transmission case we can tell you what make/model it was originally from.

Nope.  How many, if any, grooves are on the input shaft?

It looks like the transmission is still in the car. The partial VIN could be on the top of the maincase. Martin

Fernando, the two grooves on the input shaft makes it a M20.  So you have 1968 Muncie M20 4-speed that was assembled on December 14, 1967.

Keep in mind that input shafts can be changed during rebuilds.
