Does anyone know what the rear end inspection marks are for a 68z 373 rear end built in dec 67.I have seen the yellow one on the fill plug and there are a few more. It is a posi . thanks John

rarely were they the same, just put what you found.

The rear was painted before I restored the car. Nothing to go by???anyone have any original pics?? thanks john

The rears were painted black by eaton. Masked with a tube over the pinion stub/collar and sleeves protecting the Ebrake cables other than that I have not seen markings on them, there is a photo of subframes and rears being assembled around here and there are no marks visible, it is my opinion that it would be restoration graffiti on a rear end and unless documented by pre resto photos I would leave it without.

Actually, the rear axle was painted at the Chevrolet-Detroit Gear & Axle plant, where it was built; Eaton only supplied the Posi unit.

My mistake on the location, was the description of masking and lack of markings correct?
I will add that the brake drums were in place when painted and had I believe a push on spring washer type of retainer, (much like the ones that hold the heater cables to their levers) the coverage on drums varied from good on some to non existent on others.
Because the drums were in place the brake side of the backing plates would have been natural steel, some restorers use high heat charcoal grey inside the backing plate etc so they look closer to correct when they pull a drum off.

James both sides of my 69 backing plates were painted black, I assume they were dip painted prior to bolting to the diff housing, the 4 mounting bolts were not painted on the drum side. George

My Dec 1967 built car (1968) 12bolt had a ton of graffiti on a rear end
PP 1218G1
Examples: Yellow Dab forward middle drivers side of carrier, Orange Dab rear upper passanger side.
Axels green dab both sides in center of flange area. Internal to carrier orange on main caps for carrier.
WHite dabs on the wheel studs ends.
Additionally, the sticker-tag yellow w/ black lettering "PP" on the passanger drum face.
It was very easily found cuase my 396 rear main leaked for years and coated everything with a layer of grease-oil preservation, light cleaning with simple green was all it to to expose these details.
I can dig for pics.
I chose to 'Clownout' my rear based on what I found, after a bit of over restoration, paints plating, etc,,,,,
Have yet to go to a show where someone notices ANY of it.

first painted ones I've seen... goes to show you just redo what you find.

Thanks for the replys.James I understand redo what you find.But when somebody removes all of the factory markings there is nothing to find.We are restoring a rear end for a 69 trans am now and there are a bunch of original markings on it.

Hello Chick. Yes I would like to add the inspection marks to my 11d built 68z. The rear is a 373 posi. Do you have the pics from your car?thanks John
