Title: 1968 Z28
Post by: ds1 on September 05, 2014, 02:38:06 PM
Do you have an idea of how many cars are considered early cars verse the later Z28 badged cars.     Just curious about how many were built before GM pushed the option

I read somewhere that less than 5% of Z's were built from Aug to Nov of 67.  So if you say 10% of the total then you would be at best less than 800.   Maybe others that have access to the db can look and give a better guesstimate.

that makes sense to me Darrell...  as during that period, people were still 'learning' about the existence and capability of the Z28 (few knew about them during the '67 model year)... and we learned about them mostly thru car magazines, and magazine publication schedules are generally a few months behind the information gathering, and if I remember correctly it wasn't until early in 1968 calendar year (Jan or Feb?) that the Z28 emblem began being used rather than the 302 fender emblem....

If I remember correctly it was about March 15th that they eliminated the 302 emblems on '68... Danny

Which fender emblems did it come with?     Z28 or 302.      The Z28 badged cars are considered late cars,   Built in mid or late March to the end of production.   Also considered when GM started pushing the Z28 package.    My curiosity is how many early cars were built compared to late cars.    I have a late car, May 15th.    I just know when I look at 68 Z cars I have not seen near as many early 302 badged cars compared to late Z28 badged cars.    I know GM added and deleted colors around January.

and a few people likely swapped the 302 badges for Z28 badges..

Mine is a 02D car and it originally came with '302' versions from old pictures I have seen - unfortunately it now has the more common 'Z 2/8' emblems and unless I want to paint the fenders I can't revert back since the attachment holes aren't the same!

Mine hasn't been converted. I've owned it 38 years & it still had factory paint on it. FireZ has a 02E LA car that has 302 badges. I've not seen him here in a while. I would be interested in his finish date. Because of his & 2 others, I've suspected the change happened during 02E production...Joe

Mine is 04D finished in May, obvious Z/28 badge.

Marketing worked. Look how many more 69's were ordered. Word must have spread fast, before my time ,but in reading I think the drag racing world also helped push the car.

And by the 70's every 1st gen car that didn't wear a SS or RS badge adorned the Z/28. (LOL) Probably why I sort of prefer the 302 on the fenders. By the time I was showing the car anybody who came up either owned one or had a buddy who did....met some real experts.
